  1. What's the backup now if transmission lines go down? I don't think the community battery is one cell. There's probably the ability to isolate parts of it so the rest can continue to service the connected residences.
  2. If I'm driving at night and there's no traffic and clear sight lines, on the straight stretches I drive in the middle of the road. Simple reason being it's the furthest point away from wallabies on both sides so more of a chance to avoid them if they decide to get suicidal.
  3. In good news, Keith Pitt is not contesting the next election. Presumably because the National party has slid too far to the left for him.
  4. Took me a while to get that, but then I thought of Victorian drivers and it fell into place
  5. Just combine them. They're either Luddatives (give you the shits) or Conservatites (what cross-dressing high court judges wear).
  6. For those who say renewables don't work when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow... For those sites chosen for wind and solar farms - what are the actual stats? How many consecutive days is the longest time that it hasn't? And for those days, is it possible to build storage capacity of whatever kind - battery, pumped hydro, molten salt, whatever - for less per gigawatt than nuclear? If the answer is yes, then there's absolutely no reason to go for a more expensive option. The age of big power stations producing energy 24/7 whether it's used or not is over. It can be done far more efficiently and cheaper by a mix of renewables with storage, probably neighbourhood batteries etc, which also gives you a safer and more reliable decentralized grid.
  7. The LNP have released their latest work of fiction, the "costings" for their plans to kill renewables and prop up their mates in the fossil fuel industry for as long as possible... oops, I mean for nuclear power. I'm not quite sure why the party who believe so strongly in the free market and that private enterprise can do everything better, suddenly ignore the market completely and want to sink taxpayer money, IE yours and mine, into an project that private enterprise wouldn't touch with a bargepole. Private companies are investing in wind farms, solar farms, batteries etc. What they're not investing in is nuclear power. So if the vaunted private sector can't see a reasonable return from an investment in nuclear, why the hell would we sink public money into it? Dutton says it'll be 260 billion cheaper than renewables, and power prices would be lower. Every expert in the economics of power generation says that's impossible. CSIRO says it'll cost double. Experts say CSIRO is being conservative in their assessment. Then there's the time issue. Dutton says 2035. Quite apart from the cost, and the fact that nuclear power plants typically go 120% over budget, they never get completed on time. Even if they did, that's 10 years away and more coal plants are reaching end of life in that time. So we'd have to maintain those - with more public money - while we build these hugely expensive and complicated plants that we have no experience or skillsets to do so. Does anyone SERIOUSLY think that Labor is so bad that this is a better option? If Dutton gets in, he will have more of a chilling effect on renewable investment than Tony Abbott did. If you care about your children and grandchildren, PLEASE don't vote for the LNP.

  9. Vietnam and Afghanistan, to name 2...
  10. Like any investment, if you spread your risk, don't overextend and are in for the long haul, then shares are not a gamble in the common meaning of the word. If super funds lost their shirt on shares then there's bigger economic problems for everyone.
  11. Plenty of it in Al-Abama.
  12. I would have thought algebra was invented by someone named Al-Gebra...
  13. He keeps mentioning Charles the eleventh. Aren't we only up to 2?

  15. If the middleman is Colesworth, there's a reason for that - they pay the farmers peanuts.

  18. Sounds like they were, but Happy wasn't.
  19. I think that evidence is at odds with reality. Apparently the majority of victims don't tell anyone within a short time of the incident. I'm not a psychologist but have read that the reasons for this may include feelings of shame, self doubt, misplaced guilt (did I encourage this), fear, etc.
  20. The 7 dwarfs were in the bath feeling happy. So Happy got out.
  21. Quick scan of the lead stories in 2 news sites right now. ABC: Serious news about world affairs, the economy, court cases, scams, etc. News.com.au: gang rapist whinging about prison life, society fluff (Beckhams vs Meghan), Australians "frothing" over flattering summer dress, some other celebrity "wows in revealing see-through dress". (Just in case you weren't aware that see through was revealing.) And you want to defund the ABC.
  22. Absolute BS. The ABC is the only unbiased news service in the country. If you think the Merde Och press will give actual news, I've got a good bridge in Sydney that I'm willing to sell you.
  23. Well, Jacquie Lambie has admitted on radio that there's a lot of old growth in her patch.
  24. Sorry to be pedantic, but I believe it's "Bayerisch Motoren Werken" in the original or Bavarian Motor Works auf englisch.
