Impurities make steel rust more. Things like sulphur. Steel is not easy to cast. Wrought iron is made in a puddling furnace and doesn't rust much. I doubt you can get it these days. It also welds easily under the hammer. Old anchors and their chains were made from it.. IF you look on early shipwrecks you'll see it looks laminated. Nev

Boats have a strong fascination for me but not those infectious Cruisey things where you just put on weight and catch diseases or high speed expensive things that get airborne and cost the earth. Balsa is a Hardwood as defined by the cell structure and genis. It's just not very dense.. . Nev

Neither chrome or nickel are good at rust protection. Zinc gives a galvanic protection for Ferrous metals. Cadmium used to be used a lot but is CARCINOGENIC. and generally prohibited these days. In Aircraft work it replaced by a Zinc-nickel combo.. Surface treatment of Magnesium which is extremely corrosive is complex using chromic acid.. I use a lot of etch primers of good quality on metals. It's not helpful to be thick and soft as a hard surface over it will chip easily.. Nev

I'd say it's lost almost everywhere. It's well documented for all to see near Kakadu. Very informative. There are people there who don't speak a word of english at times. A busload of kids arrived there at the same time I was there about 8 years ago. Nev
