Legendary television current affairs journalist George Negus was never lost for words during his celebrated career, but he has now been virtually silenced by the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. Negus, one of the original 60 Minutes reporters when the show launched in Australia, was diagnosed with dementia about five years ago and since late 2021 has been living in an aged care facility in Sydney.

Should Drivers Be Required to Undergo a Biennial test
red750 replied to Jerry_Atrick's topic in General Discussion
The question is not about vehicle inspections, although that is a valid concern, it's about senior age drivers, and whether they are still capable of handling a vehicle, and today's traffic. It seems almost daily that you see on the news, "A vehicle driven by a senior man/woman was involved in an accident". Hitting the accelerator instead of the brake, or suffering a medical incident are common reasons. Also, many are not familiar with newer changes to road rules. Victoria has no testing for senior drivers (or vekicle checks for that matter), just pay the renewal fee over the internet (don't even have to go to VicRoads or the police station). My doctor asks if I still drive, and has not indicated I am not fit to drive. I drive on average 4 days a week (not far, weekly trips about 100km) and I do everything in my power to stay abreast of rule changes, and to ensure I concentrate on the road. I don't even have a radio or music on in trhe car. -
A friend at the Men's Shed yesterday told me about his son who owned an MG EV. He had waited some months for it and was involved in a minor collision on day one out of the dealership. My friend said the car required some new parts, but there was a 4 month delay in availablity of parts from China. I read somewhere, on Yahoo I think, that supply of parts for Chinese EV's was a problem, and you would be better to buy a vehicle from Japan or South Korea (Hyundai or Kia). Have you had any problems, @kgwilson? Another problem my friend mentioned was that insurance on EV's is many times greater than on the ICE equivalent. Also, those states which give incentives to go electric, such as reductions or rebates on registration, are about to end them. NSW and Qld already have no such incentives. Please note, I am not knocking EV's and if I had the money (at almost 80 I couldn't get a loan regardless of my credit score) I would be in one in an instant. I'm just trying to confirm/clarify some things I heard/read.

This won't go down well with 98% of you guys, but I lay much of the blame for the disgusting scenes in Melbourne at the foot of the governments, state and federal. Such an emotive display should not have been held in a location right on the border of the CBD, where it was known a large collection of rabble would disrupt the access to the city for people wishing to go about their business. Such an exhibition or convention should have been held on a military base, where military police and soldiers could have kept control of the troublemakers.

This is Paul Murray. He has a nightly program where he lambasts the ALP and the Democrats, and bowing and scraping to Donald Trump. Very, very pro Republican.

I only get the broken image emoji.

Paul Murray is the biggest Trump butt kisser in Australia.

Celebrating Positives (offset of the Gripes Thread)

The kids gave me a set of bluetooth headphones for Fathers Day. I have it paired to my computer so I can listen to Youtube and other videos without interrupting or annoying them. I bought a bluetooth TV transmitter but when you plug it in the headphone socket it cuts out the speaker so the others can't hear the TV. It only cost $9 on eBay, so no big deal. I have an expensive bluetooth transmitter which operates with my hearing aids, so I can hear the TV and not require the subtitles, and the kids can still hear the TV. In fact I don't need the TV so loud which is good for them also. The headphones are also paired to my iPhone. When my son works from home (3 days a week), his computer is next to the TV in the family room. I can mute the TV and listen through hearing aids/bluetooth without interfering with his calls. -

I used Foxtel voice search and it says the show will play on Sept 18.

I checked the onscreen directory to set the recorder for the next episode, but it's timeslot has been filled by My Kitchen Rules, so I don't know when the nexrt episode will air.
