There are essentially three models of concurrent processing (ex. quantum computing): multithreading, fork/exec, and now gpu programming. I am learning of the latter but, yes have previously been involved in the two former. The best way to learn it is to join an open source project as a contributor - but be prepared, they are full of egos. Years ago I joined the linux kernel team and mainly focused on bringing the ISO network stack - for me network address translation to the kernel. But I did dabble in kernel process dispatchers..all written in C then If you want to learn rust, there is a project starting to natively support rust in the Linux kernel

A coder? tsk tsk tsk... I was a software engineer, or developer, or systems programmer - but coder???!! ๐ A few on here are, or were. Surpised you don't have COBOL from university in that era... I still dabble - mainly Java and C/C++ these days... Though will have to learn Rust (not of the kind that corrodes metal!!) as, although it is already over 8 years old, it is slowly going to be overtake C and C++ because it is both a low level language and is memory safe - alledgedly anyway.

Er.. unless you have moved lately, I think you mean miles :-)

OK.. Fess up, Specy... how many accidents and speeding tickets?

Yes, but I think @newsaroundme is a little south of where I am.

What programming languages did you learn back in 1988 and up to now? And what languages are you learning now? If you learned C (or its forerunner, Algol) back in 1988, not much has actually changed, except graphics and object oriented, functional, and aspect oriented programming. The latter are programming paradigms rather than technology themselves.

That is true; though it is possible that there could be a touch of makeup, photoshop or both. But, to be fairto Scott Baio, if youy look after yourself, there's little reason you won't age well. My My, doesn't Henry Winkler look a little like a smurf in the older shot... ๐

Celebrating Positives (offset of the Gripes Thread)
Jerry_Atrick replied to Jerry_Atrick's topic in General Discussion
We all make arses of ourselves every so often.. It's pretty rare people hold grudges (unless it's really bad). I would suggest from the president's reactionn, you have probably read more into it than was there. Enioy your return to the shed. And what better way to do the community a service than to bring along the Vietnam vet? -
18 degrees in SW England, after a chilly start (4 degrees). But sunny and no wind.

Back to the Robodebt royal commission. It has already been a year since it concluded. And what has been done? -

Don't get me wrong here, But I LIKE Donald Trump.
Jerry_Atrick replied to Phil Perry's topic in Politics
I really like Kamala Harris - she seems to have a good blend of leadership, empathy, and a kind of ability to relate to the average person, whatever that really is. Noboy's perfect, because perfection is subjective anyway, but I have a feeling she would give many leaders a good run for their money. Of course, I may be proven totally wrong, but she can't be worse that bat-ship crazy Trump... -

Who would have thought - after round 7 (of 24 rounds), the Hawks were second bottom and looking pretty well buggered for the season. They then went on to win all but I think it was two, to the end of the round, taking some fairly prized scalps. Last week they more than comfortably accounted for teh Bulldogs at the MCG in the elimination final. Today, they take on Port Adelaide in Adelaide! I am not going to get much work done today! For the first tim in the season, they have injuries to key players - Will Day who has turned out to be a mercurial midfielder; Sam Frost, who has gone from being the laughing stock of defending to actually making good decisions and quite handy at his craft. They still go in warm favourties with a gut-running, fast style of game, that really just takes the game back to its basics. Despite a small defence and forward line, they have been playing well above their height. Although favouurites, it will be tough for them to win, and if they don't, well, it puts the next season on positive tilt because they have had key long term injuries to key position players that also should come back next season. If they do win, a sneaky trip to Melbourne for a couple of weeks may be the order of the day..

I'm still waiting, in suspense, I must say, for the original answer..

True, but the success of these fairs is often decided by location. A two day trip to whoop whoop for a day's networking may see numbers drop off. If you host it in a secure military location, there may the slight issue of security clearances (admittedly, not on all military premises) and logistics making sure large numbers of people don't go poking their noses where they shouldn't; and also there is liability, etc, which I think (at least in the UK) operate differently to civilian law. I agree with the aspirations of the protestors, but while there are nefarious actors out there, we have to realise we live in the real world. If you just look at Ukraine - imagine if they 9justifiably) wer sceptical of both the west and Russia in guaranteeing them their security that they retained and maintained their nuclear arsenal.. They way well still have Crimea (or they may well have gone the way Russia did and let it all go to pot, but the point is, Russia would have been far more cauious with picking a fight if they knew the odds were much more stacked against them).

On the telephone to the IT help desk with a problem with my remote access, they were saying they didn't know when they would have it fixed but will email me (at my work email address) when it was fixed

Do you have my kids in the back of your car?

I have no idea where she gets then from... both partner and I have fat finger syndrome. She is good at photography, but most of her "art" emanates from her mouth. Those fingers are for sneakily "lifting" things.. she is wearing my jumper in that photo

We went to a local kitchen supplier who does their own (so cabinet makers that also sell you worktops and othet things). They use sold wood for the carcasses and the front panels, and they were only a little more expensive than the bich chains that use MDF. Just have to find a decent cabinet maker (unless you have the skills yourself, which I clearly don't have). Come to think of it, I have a long-lost cousin in Queensland - used to be in the Bowen area who was a cabinet maker..
