Africa is splitting to form two continents.
old man emu replied to red750's topic in General Discussion
The African Plate is moving towards the Eurasian Plate at a rate of 2.15 cm per year, causing subduction where oceanic crust is converging with continental crust. The Arabian Plate is moving in a similar direction, but the Somali Plate is moving away from both. That is causing the split which can be seen as the Great Rift Valley of East Africa which lies along the boundary of the African and Somali Plates. -
I was going to answer by saying that we could find out who Elon Musk is by referring to official records. Could we confirm by checking official records that Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa's administrative capital? However, we have been trained to believe that even official records can be changed or created to suit the goals of a plan. The alteration of records is one of the plot devices of Orwell's 1984. So Musk's birth records could be a fiction. We can't rely on the veracity of his parent's birth and citizenship records. We know that Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent found a baby in a space vehicle and raised him as their own child. No one ever seems to have researched Clark's birth records. Post scriptum: I used the analogy of Superman simply as an example of how PMC's idea could be implemented, using a well known, albeit fictional, character.

I did use the word very loosely. Before Trump's Order, the USA was a patriarchy, a society in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it, whereas a matriarchy is a social system is which women have more power in the community than men. I was trying to say that Trump had made all men females through a definition that did not correspond with the scientific definition that identifies the sexes, and since those men would not be likely to give up power, you would have a matriarchy.

Donald Trump this week turned the United States into a matriarchy. Matriarchy is a social system in which positions of dominance without violence and privilege are held by women. How did he do that? Quite simply by signing an Executive Order written by his minions who only had the most elementary knowledge of how male/female sex is determined by chromosomal type. I take it that you know that the sex of a human is determined by a specific type of chromosomes designated as X and Y, with females having two X chromosomes (XX) and males having one X and one Y chromosome (XY), meaning the presence of a Y chromosome determines male sex. You also know that a chromosome is the way in which genes are collected together, a bit like putting a whole heap of assembly instructions in one folder. OK so how did Trump turn everyone in the United States female? Simply by defining, that a "female" as "a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell." The order defines "male" as "a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell." At conception either a sperm carrying an X chromosome, or one with a Y chromosome may enter the ovum produced by the female, to match the X chromosome of the female. The genes located on the Y chromosome which cause the developing embryo to eventually be male do not come into action for about six weeks after conception. Therefore at conception and for up to six weeks thereafter, an embryo's sex is female. The noun "sex" for centuries has had the meaning meaning "quality or character of being either male or female", based upon the anatomical distinction between male and female as evidenced by physical characteristics of their genital organs and the part taken by each in reproduction." It's usually assigned at birth as male or female, since until only since recent times could those physical characteristics be observed before birth. Ironically, as a result of this Order, all previously heterosexual marriages have become same-sex marriages. Here's a picture of the Trump Administration's Chief Scientific Advisor

I think you might mean 'trademarked' the word. I wonder if a person could trademark 'f#ck' and its verb and gerundive forms -
Where dja gettit? I was Googling for a definition of 'fascism'. I got his quote from Lenin Then I searched for that quote and came up with this: https://orinocotribune.com/fascism-is-capitalism-in-decay/

Glancing over the previous posts made since Trump was inaugurated and started his autographing blitz, I have come to the conclusion that he is the greatest destroyer of the good order and discipline of the worldwide economy. If his orders regarding the functioning of the US economy are followed, I envisage a collapse of the world's trading and financial system. His policies are spreading terror, not only in his own country, but elsewhere. He has made a mockery of the democratic principles that the USA has said it was defending since 1945. By the way, who voted for the USA to be the World's Policeman? He has made a mockery of the once respected Office of the President of the United States. The rest of the world is either laughing at him openly, or, or they want to curry favour (Russia, China and North Korea) they are doing so with a covered mouth. We have be taught that Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Kim Yong Jun and Mao represent the worst of political leaders, but I think Trump eclipses them. Do you think that the following description of Fascism applies to the USA at present? Fascism arises as a desperate attempt by the ruling capitalist class to maintain its power. It is a form of authoritarianism that emerges when capitalism is in a state of decay, During periods of economic crisis or decline, the ruling capitalist class may face challenges to maintain their dominance. In response, they might turn to authoritarian and nationalist movements as a means to protect their interests and maintain control. Fascism is the extreme manifestation of these efforts. Economic collapse can generate fear and insecurity in society. Fascist leaders often thrive on this fear, offering a sense of order and protection in exchange for loyalty and obedience.

The story that the above links to is an example of the glorification of Trump by the giga-rich. It especially irks me that present day giga-rich very often got that way by starting with the backing of mega-rich parents. One wonders if the giga-rich have ever done the slightest bit of actual work themselves.

Celebrating Positives (offset of the Gripes Thread)

Hurrah!!!!! I have something to celebrate. My car's air bag warning light suddenly came on a couple of months ago, but being well versed in modern automotive technology, I chose to bear with the presence of the illuminated warning rather than find the fault and fix it. Actually I was afraid that mice had dined on the wiring in some hard-to-reach place. More fear came from the thought that the problem was in the computer system of the car. The car is coming up for its annual roadworthiness inspection, and I had a bigger problem in that the handbrake wasn't working. So I figured I would get my mechanic to deal with the handbrake and while he had the car to run a diagnostic check. Fixing the handbrake involved removing the front passenger seat. When that was done, it was discovered that wires had broken off one side of a connector. I've been putting off rejoining the wires because I don't have a covered work space, and it has either been too sunny (hot) or too windy to work outside. Well, today the weather conditions were suitable for working outside and I got stuck into fixing it. I honestly thought that rejoining the wires would not be the fix, but I was glad to see that it actually was. Now I can present the car for inspection and see what other minor fault can be found to require fixing before it passes. -
The 22nd Amendment which Limits the number of times a person can be elected President took 3 years, 343 days to be ratified as set out in the Constitution. To become part of the Constitution, an amendment must be ratified by three-fourths of the states (38 since 1959). I can't see the Blue States ratifying such an amendment, by which time the election for the next President will have been held - an election that Trump could not contest under the present Constitution.

Do you think that Dutton would do as Prime Minister what Albanese does as Prime Minister. I don't think so. He would act differently. The furore over the way Trump conducts his presidency is created because he doesn't act as the country and the World expects a president to act. What is publicised are the examples of his actions and the comparison to what we considered to be normal.

One doesn't have to be at home to expect to be safe from armed attack. Safety should be everywhere.

Didn't think of that. So much for a mob of grumpy old men not being allowed to say what they think. Big Brother is watching.

That's where your whole point falls down. You've told us half the story. What was the question? Without our having that information, we cannot judge the appropriateness of her answer.

The function of a Foreign Minister.

That does sound like a good thing to do BUT it would go against the ethos of this forum that we have established amongst ourselves over the years. I state it quite plainly now that I totally disagree with Gareth's position. However, I'll hold the mike for him so that he can express it. That's the ethos of this forum - recognising the right of each member to express an opinion. But we must consider if the debate of such a contentious topic as the Palestinian situation with such fervour is for the overall good of the forum. Sometimes a decision to pull back from a confrontation is the valorous thing to do. Perhaps, for the sake of the forum we might agree to disagree; get onto another topic, and let this one wither on the vine. I know that there will be responses to this post, and I don't mind. But will the decision be to drop the topic?

While it might be acceptable to call a bloke an f-wit in a pub, it is extremely unwise to do so about the leader of another country in the presence of the media. If you want any proof of the veracity of her answer, just watch any reports of what Trump has done since the election result was announced. We forumites are pretty unique in that once a person has laid down their position on a topic, the rest of us accept the person's right to such a position. I have formed the opinion that you would not vote for Labor in a one horse race. So be it. I'm happy that a fact has been established and that fact will influence how I interpret your posts when necessary.

Celebrating Positives (offset of the Gripes Thread)

This morning I started to go through what's in the boxes that have been stacked up for two years. I'm keeping photos and family records and sending most of the rest to the OP shop. Who needs several dinner set or sets of glasses that were the go as wedding gifts fifty years ago, but you kids have no use for now? -
Penny was wise enough to go no further. She planted the seed and left it to you and I and the rest to interpret her reply. What a great way to deal with journalists whose bias you are not sure of.

You are Oh, so right in that statement. One might describe her as an inscrutable Asian lady. In my opinion, she is the best person in both Houses at doing her job.

Here's a reporter's story (I wouldn't call the writer a journalist) that to me clearly indicates a failure to provide an explanation to the family and public of the stages of a Coronial Inquiry. That gives fuel to the claim that the Police were withholding information. 1. The incident occurred on 29th November 2024. The deceased died on 2nd December 2024. (Notice the reporter used the American system of stating a date. I used the Australian one.) 2. The next step would be the conduct of a post mortem. That involves organising a Pathologist to do the investigation and then to write up the results. I'm sure that samples would have been taken for drug/alcohol analysis. Give a couple of weeks for the results to come back, especially since the Festive Season would have shut down the forensic labs. So the Pathologist might have only been able to finalise the report of the PM in the middle of January. 3. Meanwhile, would be conducting crime scene examinations and interviewing witnesses. The deceased would have been formally identified by the day after death, and a preliminary report submitted to the Coroner shortly afterwards. 4. By the end of January it is clear that the investigation revealed that the cause of death was not due to any living person's criminal act. So there was nothing to bring before a Criminal Court. 5. Since the decision not to proceed with a prosecution was made, the death simply meets the criteria for a Coronial Inquest to determine who died, when and where they died, and the cause of death. The Coroner would most likely comment on the circumstances of the death. A Coroner can make a finding that someone is criminally liable for the death, or that there is no criminality. I, too would be interested to learn the cause of death. That fact has a great impact on whether or not the death was justifiable in all the circumstances. I'm sure that a distinguished barrister will be engaged by the family of the deceased to act on their behalf at the Inquest to probe at depth the evidence provided to the Coroner. I wonder if the family will tell the Coroner the reason why the deceased entered the home, disguised and armed with a weapon.

Self-defence of oneself or of another under attack has always been allowed. The only caveat has been that the resisting force must not be greater that the attacking force. In other words, hand to hand; same weapon type to same weapon type. Let's ask a few questions of the deceased's mother. Why had he been in prison and had been in and out of juvenile detention since he was 12? What role did she play in teaching her son to respect the rights of other people? “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree” is a proverb that means early influences have a lasting effect. Who is the source of those early influences? I'm charitable enough to think that the society the mother and son grew up in wasn't ideal as compared to some other societies, but all societies have basic rules. And the society I am referring to is not the pre-European Indigenous society. These people lived in a European society, taking the ups and downs of that society. Another point that I would raise is that, if the deceased had been confined in institutions from the age of twelve, why wasn't he given an education which might have allowed him a glimpse of a better life. Not that a better life was much of a chance in an isolated town where the odds of gaining employment are blown out be the colour of one's skin.

My gripe? I'm getting jack of all the shit about Trump. I wish I could alter my YouTube algorith.
