Can you have any sympathy for those who, not having little or no knowledge of the world of finance, place their money into unsafe places? Our banking system might not be completely run by rogues, but at least they are rogues who stretch the limits of a regulatory system.

Trump's Tariff Troubles

Recognition of the battles of the Australian Army during the North African campaign usually concentrates on the capture of Bardia, Tobruk and the push to Benghazi ("The Benghazi Handicap"), and the later Siege of Tobruk by the Germans. However there was an earlier engagement that created the first crack in the control of the area by the Italians, leading to those early victories. This is known as the Siege of Giarabub, a highly fortified, Italian centre. This was an engagement planned by Australian commanders and carried out by Australian infantry and artillery units. Its success illustrated both the planning skill of the commanders and the fighting spirit of the Australian infantry soldiers. While all the other battles are not forgotten, the victory at Giarabub is mostly unknown. Here is a video telling the Australian side of the Siege. The Italians also made a movie about it.

Don't get me wrong here, But I LIKE Donald Trump.
old man emu replied to Phil Perry's topic in Politics
I am hoping that Trump is not assassinated while he is President. Apart from the fact that killing any human is abhorrent, I think that the idea that his Vice-President would step up to the plate with no idea how to bat is scary. In living memory only two Vice-Presidents have stepped in to take the place of a deceased President - Truman and Johnson. Both these men were experienced in government from the State level to the Senate. Ignoring their policies, at least they knew how to operate within the system. Vance, on the other hand has not had that essential experience. While Trump will dominate the headlines as president, a close eye will be kept on Vance's approach to key policy issues such as abortion, immigration and foreign policy — and how his stances could shape the Republican Party's post-Trump era. Though the vice president's job is seldom in the spotlight, with Trump re-entering office at 78, there is a higher than usual chance Vance could end up sitting in the Oval Office at some point in the next four years. Should Trump die from whatever cause, would Vance have the political skills to be a leader and not the led? -
Previously, providing ID had seemed the most likely method, given it's still the only ironclad way to verify a person's age. Now, platforms will have to give us at least one other option, and biometric data is the next most likely candidate — specifically facial estimation technology, which guesses your age based on your appearance. How will Albo go? I reckon he's got a boyish face. AI isn't perfect. It could identify his image as that of an under-16. How does a person input their facial biometrics if they don't have a camera set up on their computer. (But I suppose that that is a moot point if they are using a mobile device.)

But the Boomers still hold the reins of power in the political Parties, and I must admit that Boomer politicians are the product of their Depression Era parents and the Menzies Era of government. Perhaps the best thing for Boomers to do is retire quietly and let their children make the World theirs.

Nobody has told us the circumstances of the murder. Was it cold-blooded, or a bitch fight that went bad? As for the IVF, most likely there would be no embryo transplant. The woman would have eggs collected and they would be fertilised 'in vitro' (test tube). It is possible that the sperm donor would be known to her, perhaps her partner at the time of the offence, and any child might be placed in his care after the five years. Once again we are going off, half-cocked, without all teh facts.

Video was probably released after the completion of a Trial. -
Here's the Abrahamic reason: Genesis 2:2-3 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

When does sprinkling become rain? The BOM radar is only showing very light rain. By dodging the raindrops you could run a mile and not get wet.

When I was undergoing training for my basic police driver's certification, I was put on a skid pan and the object of the lesson was to drive around it without losing directional control. Included in the instruction was recovery from loss of steering control, but the aim of the lesson was to identify the conditions that led to loss of control, and to drive so as to avoid them. I think we have previously discussed the pros and cons of "defensive driving" courses. I see them as being a little bit like stall training and recovery in flight training. It's fun to fly into a stall and recover quickly, but the real thing to be taught there is the identification of conditions that will lead to stalling. When applied to driving, we need to teach firstly how far a vehicle will travel in an "emergency stop" to instill the habit of driving at a safe distance, but also what conditions during cornering can lead to the vehicle yawing and trying to swap ends. Look, there are so many little intricacies to driving that we could fill pages here dealing with each and every one and how to introduce the student driver to them. That's why I say that what is needed is an organised series of both practical and theory lessons and a system to enable parents supervising the learning to assess if the student has met a suitable level of competency. Note that I used the word "supervising". Apparently, only licensed driving instructors can "teach". That's why the licensing authorities should produce some sort of training package. -
Trump is not alone in staring at economic troubles. Putin is having trouble with the value of the ruble.

I disagree with your argument in that farm driving experience is directly applicable to driving on public roads. They may be able to operate a vehicle a low speed in paddocks and in off-road conditions, but public roads are a vastly different environment. Sure, they can put a vehicle into motion and control its direction on the farm with no other distractions, but they should really accept that they know nothing about how to drive as a licenced driver. -

Go to your pilot's log book for when you were learning to fly and use it to develop lesson plans that will progress him from first flight (vehicle controls) to restricted pilot's licence ( driving test). Don't forget to instill pre-flight inspections. Early on, get him travelling on a straight road at 60 kph and have him take his foot off the accelerator and observe how the vehicle slows down. Then you can tell him to use that technique when applicable (traffic lights) and not be relying on the brakes. In my opinion, the service brake should only be used to complete a stop from about 40 kph. -

The problem quite simply is that there is no guidance available to parents who want to teach their children to drive. Just think of how you were taught to fly. You first learned how to operate the plane, then you soloed, but spent a few more hours doing circuits and bumps to improve our skills handling the simplest manoeuvres. Your instructor taught you using a logical sequence and briefed you on the aims and goals of each lesson. Such a thing does not exist for parents. I even wonder of professional driving instructors follow some sort of step-by-step lesson plan. As for setting a minimum number of hours to be logged, without that logical sequence of lessons, much time is wasted. You will often see learner drivers travelling on highways for long distances to "rack up the hours", but those are empty learning hours since they don't involve much practice in dealing with traffic or even handling such things as turns into and out of side streets, negotiating roundabouts, or dealing with traffic lights. The State vehicle licensing authorities only supply learners with a book of the road rules. What is needed is a publication which includes lesson plans and methods to determine if the student has met the competencies set out in the lesson plan. -
Yet another day when the promised thunderstorms, or even scattered showers, manage to avoid my place. The BOM claimed that there would be rainfall over most of today and into the weekend. All I can see is thin cloud and the humidity up to 25%, which is about twice the usual level for this time of year. The radar shows rain forming downwind, but nothing on the approach.

Don't your Garndies take any interest in their kids' sporting activities, or do they consider the footy club a free child minding service?

You have to determine the number of dyed-in-the-wool supporters for each Party. They are the people who would never change sides. Each party can rely on those votes without having to do much to gain them. Then you have the voters who have considered the merits of each Party's platform and vote based on the results of that. I doubt if the numbers of those are great enough to have a great impact on the result. Finally there are the swinging voters who respond to the sales pitch. These are the ones who provide the numbers to determine the result. In gathering those swinging voters, it is pretty clear that while Harris's campaign was formulated by people experienced in running a government, Trump's was created by experts in advertising psychology. The swinging voters were won over with 'bread and circuses', but never were asked to investigate where the flour and entertainers were coming from. The presenter of this video points out the self-centeredness of a lot of people which biased them towards the "them versus us" theme of a lot of Trump's advertising. Bear with the Southern accent.

That hand operated brake was once called an emergency brake for use if the service brake system failed. Probably not so important before hydraulic brakes became the norm. Also, you can't do handbrake turns without a manually operated handbrake. -
I'd rather see dog parks with no caravans allowed.

With a pro-Conservative media, little of the good, or even OK, stuff that the Government does gets reported. I think one of the good things Labor has done is to fix our relations with China that the Conservatives ruined by their lap dog pandering to the USA. At least now our Government cans say to China that we don't like something they are doing, while at the same time having good trade, cultural and educational relationships. If only the Government would have the guts to tell the USA that their policies aren't the best for promoting peaceful coexistence.

That's the point my son made to me, without alleging the I was a silly old fart. Older people don't try to apply what they did as kids to what they would like to see their kids/grandkids do. Older people do not comprehend that it is a vastly different world for the kids, but the acceptable behaviours towards others are ageless. It is the way that those behaviours are taught and applied in a digital world that is what should be addressed. He and the DIL have access to the boys' social media accounts and can see what is going on. The DIL is an Early Childhood Educator qualified in child development, and my son knows how to operate in the social media world. As well, they are both very involved in supporting the boys in their education and extracurricular activities. I would accept their opinions regarding the use of social media over those of a 50+-years old politician, as well as all those of parents who don't have the experiences in education and social media that my son and DIL have. When I asked why the boys and their mates weren't getting out and about after school with their mates, the reply was that; 1. There are no suitable open spaces in their suburb 2. There is a council-built BMX track just down the road, but adults shoo kids away from such facilities because 'they might do damage to it'. 3. The boys come home and, after doing their chores, they connect with friends digitally and can talk and play computer games through the internet.
