  1. In 1976 I jumped into Lake Batur to repair an outrigger that had come adrift from our boat. Cold, very deep, scary.
  2. They say power corrupts and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Most of us are lucky enough to have our worst inner voices controlled by the need to get along with our fellow humans.
  3. They’ll dig up millions of these little items. What will they make if them?
  4. …and the islands and sandbars in the South China Sea that he has militarised. Plus the fishing boats from his neighbours which have been bullied out of their traditional fishing grounds. China’s assertiveness has driven most of its neighbours (even Vietnam) into the arms of America.
  5. I agree, Spacey. Genetic evidence indicates as few as 8 human females survived a cataclysm 70,000 years ago, which was probably caused by the Lake Toba eruption. Numerous ancient cultures were totally wiped out, leaving only ruins and legends, so perhaps a few survived. What folklore would survive our civilization’s demise?
  6. After their systematic State-supported doping program, why are the ever allowed back?
  7. I couldn’t find any posts on here about that mongel bloke Murphy. He deserves a section of his own. This arvo I descovered a few more of his vindictive Laws. When you carefully fit a new cut-off disk to your Dremel, don all necessary PPE, then crawl into position ready to perform delicate surgery under a machine, you will accidentally bump said disk, only slightly, but enough to break it. You will then have to grovel out from under the machine, remove PPE and go and find a new disk. When you get setup with a functioning disk and are finally in position to start cutting, the sun will miraculously shine directly into your face, making it impossible to see what the hell you are doing. When finally finished, while clambering out from your uncomfortable work position, your hand will rest on the hot cutting surface of the tool you just put down.
  8. Pretty nonchallant flight crew. Did well.
  9. Good to see, but I’d have much more respect for the ICC if they’d applied equal zeal to investigating war crimes by the US and its allies.
  10. Not being a Mexican, I know little of that bouncy-ball game. My main source of info is watching the Fitzroy Youth Club.
  11. For anyone not concerned at the poor education standards in the USA; this city’s officials were negotiating with a nation that doesn’t exist! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/16/newark-officials-duped-kailasa-nithyananda
  12. If so, they’re using technology (and maybe laws of physics) that are beyond our imagination.
  13. This lady obviously didn’t:
  14. This topic led to much discussion at my mechanic mate’s garage yesterday. Everyone had stories of Lead batteries exploding-and doing people immense harm- and Pb Acid batteries have had over a century to be perfected. The Lithium battery packs used in EVs have a good safety record, but many of them are mounted right under the rear passenger seat. Some depend on being kept cool via an electric blower that sucks air from the cabin. Very few of the filter pads ever get replaced, so a blocked filter is a fire hazard. Today I hope to finish installing the “battery ejector” on my camper. A big LiFePO4 battery behind the left wheel, suspended by three ratchet straps. If it catches fire, the polyester straps instantly melt and it drops and slides back onto the ground. Very unlikely for this battery chemistry, but it is a cheapie, so who knows how safe it is?
  15. You forgot to mention the turtles it all sits on.
  16. Why waste time on anything coming from the evil empire? It’s not likely to be true.
  17. We’re told that an atom is pretty much a scaled-down Solar System: tiny subatomic particles orbiting at impossible speeds, with enormous empty gaps between. Plenty of room for cosmic rays and anything else to pass straight through. Who knows what could fit in all that empty space!
  18. The weapons industry is the big winner in this terrible conflict; they cannot lose. If their newest technology is captured by the other team, they still benefit, because their government will pump yet more dollars their way to develop the next generation of weapons and countermeasures.
  19. My wife found this truism:
  20. Our VRA unit just started a short Tech course on de-activating hybrid and electric vehicles. Its mostly for mechanics, but also emergency workers. Some EVs use up to 600volts, so making them safe is pretty important. 1000-volt rubber gloves are a mandatory part of the kit. One strict procedure is to lock key fobs away, at least three metres from the vehicle, lest it start without warning.
  21. No matter how impressive the defence, the final decision is made by the judge or jury; don’t they have a brain?
  22. Exploiting the faithful has always been the best way to political power. Keeping them ignorant is even better.
  23. That’s almost identical to the GVM of my wife’s diesel i30.
  24. Archaeology is a dynamic field, with new discoveries often overturning old assumptions. Gobekli Tepe, in SE Turkey is just one of many buried structures that shattered old ideas we were raised on. There are thousands of man-made objects from ancient times that, even today, we might not be able to make.
