  1. A pain in the proverbial for developers, but sometimes neccessary in this young country, where stuff built by our settler ancestors might be thin on the ground. I once drove though the NW of the state with my wife’s grandfather, who pointed out the sites of numerous shanties and their associated vineyards (from the days before refrigeration changed our drinking preference to beer). Almost nothing of this, our history, is left for us to see. After helping my hard-working parents build fences, yards, sheds and gateways on our farm (and they were built to last!), it was heartbreaking to see them all bulldozed by the new owners. When I take my grandies to see their heritage, there’s nothing to see.
  2. When my sister graduated from yet another nursing course, I suggested she might as well have trained as a doctor. She looked at me and retorted: ”But I want to help people!”
  3. Mazda’s EV with a tiny Wankel range-extender engine looks to be the ideal future car for this country.
  4. The worst I ever saw was an Anglo-Aussie who glanced at me as I walked into his room then started writing on his script pad. Either my malady was bluddy obvious, he was an amazing diagnostian… In the event, he was dead wrong and his medicine did me no good.
  5. Recently had to replace my wife’s Peugeot 407, the best car we’ve owned. After weeks of searching, we found the one we wanted, identical to our daughter’s: a 2016 model Hyundai i30 1.6litre diesel. Very popular, reliable car with lots of safety features. After a few weeks we measured the average fuel burn at 4.7litres per 100km- 59.9mpg in old money. Should last us till the infrastructure for electrics is well enough developed for them to be viable in rural areas.
  6. Our little town, like most rural areas, is lucky to have a couple of GPs. They tend to be from south Asia or West Africa and don’t stay long. Meanwhile, there seem to be lots of Doctors in coastal areas and big cities. Perhaps it’s about time to break the union stranglehold of the Australian Medical Association, and allow a few more Aussie kids into Medical School. Also, our government should show some backbone and allocate those lucrative Medicare Numbers a bit more fairly.
  7. America leads the world in lots of areas: insanity, violence, greed, etc. but that nation also throws up the odd Prophet we might learn from. https://www.smh.com.au/culture/books/america-built-by-religious-fanatics-who-promoted-armed-struggle-paul-auster-20230306-p5cpqm.html?dicbo=v2-f4ckwsr
  8. That’s every week and has always been.
  9. Typical Hollywood effects: dumbed down for the impatient and uneducated. The dust debris thrown up from the supposed impact point is billowing out like you’d expect it to in our planet’s atmosphere. The Moon doesn’t have an atmosphere.
  10. Lots of interesting ideas in this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4mKGgjPWEw
  11. This is a good summary:
  12. Spot on, OME. We don’t miss what we don’t know about. I’ve long realised the dilemma of giving development aid to poor countries; it raises aspirations faster than those developing nations can keep up. Every household in the poor world can see glossy magazines, TV shows and movies about the life of plenty we enjoy. Certainly a major factor in the current exodus of African immigrants to Europe.
  13. The major difference is education; our Rednecks went to proper schools.
  14. Not neccessarily a good thing. The Poles have many grievances with the Russians, from atrocities like the Katyn Forest massacre to losing land when the Soviets moved their border westward. If Russia comes out of this conflict weakened, expect a Balkans-like series of conflicts at least as bad is this one.
  15. There have also been reports of undercover Ukrainian units operating far inside Russia. Presumably they were responsible for at least some of the explosions and fires in critical facilities.
  16. Hitler was seen as a great leader during the 30s for dragging Germany out of Depression. He was even named Time’s Man of the Year, but it was all built on credit; he had to plunder his neighbours to pay for it. Mugabe might have been worse:
  17. The Russian Federation includes 21 different divisions; it’s a complex ethnic mix that Moscow is very keen to keep together. Terrible retribution has followed any attempts at gaining local autonomy, let alone separation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republics_of_Russia
  18. One of the few animals I have no qualms in killing on sight. The buggers have attacked me so many times without warning that I now conduct regular scans of my stone walls for them; they can build a new nest in a day! Almost all their nests are on the northern side of our house, but recently I noticed one high up on the southern side. Being too difficult to reach with a flaming roll of newspaper or a long pole, I resorted to gunfire: wound down the regulator on my air rifle to minimum power and brought it down with a couple of pellets, which bounced harmlessly off the timber rafter and clattered into the guttering.
  19. There isn’t enough of it. All the gold in world would fit into a suburban supermarket. A return to a gold-backed currency would cause a massive rise in the price of the yellow metal. China, Russia, Turkey and other nations have in recent years reacted to America’s trade sanctions (abuse of the dollar’s position as world currency) by quietly building up their gold reserves. There was much talk of them launching a new gold-backed crypto currency to compete against the US$. The world is overdue for a currency reset like the Breton-Woods Agreement in 1944, but the big nations would first have to be actually talking to each other.
  20. The gap separating political parties in America has turned into a Gulf since Murdoch and his sons were made US citizens by Reagan.
  21. Wife has a family connection to this bloke; sorry she couldn’t send me a link to the impressive outdoor performance, but here is the studio version: https://youtu.be/w1zakvWf970
