    I doubt that, but there is a precedent. The story goes that during the Maori wars the Pakeha ran out of ammo and the locals were so enjoying the battle that they sent them some more!

    The old narrow-gauge track never made it past Laramar, less than half way to Alice Springs. Thirty-odd years ago I helped a mate scour the abandoned track for iron sleepers; we only found bent ones. Because of termites, they were re-used in stockyards and fences.

    Probably not Nev, but lots of national infrastructure wouldn’t pass such a test. We inland people were very excited to have a rail corridor coming past us. It had the potential to enormously reduce truck traffic and the associated damage on our roads. Cudos for politicians for over-ruling the bean-counters to get the project started, but… Several national firms want it used as an express service between major centres, potentially by-passing the rural communities who thought they would finally get a better link to take their produce to our ports.

    Little Norway can afford this amazing infrastructure because of their sensible policies; they have a trillion dollars in national savings. Australia might have been in the same position if we had enacted one of Whitlam’s policies. Instead, we are a trillion in debt, foreign corporations make huge profots from our resources and don’t pay tax.

    Just had a yarn with my big brother, who recently travelled to his old mate’s funeral. He reckoned the bloke lived by the motto: ”I’m gonna spend 80% of my money on wine, women and song… and waste the rest!”

    We were taught that in ancient Athens, some citizens had to be publicly shamed into exercising their democratic rights. When a vote was due, slaves carrying ropes soaked in die would coralle the recalcitrants, “roping them in’ to their responsibilities.

    American voters should never forget the appalling performance of almost the whole Republican party in recent years.

    Easy to underestimate the height of your vehicle. Yesterday I did my regular run in a new bus- a small Merc. I had a shock after I drove into the parking bay. The plurry air con unit above the roof had only just cleared the ceiling.

    If the Dems scrape thru this with a majority, they should quickly expand the Supreme court to redress the bias wrought by treacherous Republicans. Creating a national holiday on voting day might allow a few more citizens to participate.

    Stop it! Nearly made me cry. Took me back to our old farm, kero lamps and meatsafe. The radio (run by expensive big batteries) was our window on the world. Blue Hills was a household friend for my hardworking, lonely parents.

    I suspect few of them actually believe that, but like people down thru the ages, they find it expedient to be cowardly followers. They’ve seen what happens to anyone who challenges the mob.

    No horse- I planted a small grove of citrus trees outside my workshop. They get watered several times per day. They especially like it when one old mate visits: he clambers out of his old truck saying “quick, I’ve been reamed out!” They produce masses of fruit.

    Nev we need some; I actually lost fat off my gut while hospitalized after breaking my hip. I had to inject anti-coagulant every day for six weeks and it got noticeably harder to pinch up enough belly fat for the needle. I blame crappy hospital food, which sure killed my appetite It got so bad that, in desperation I took up drinking large quantities of beer to redress the decline. Sacrifices you make for your health!
