During my working life we had crews made up of people from all over Australia. Majority of Queenslanders, but a lot of others. The South Australians were the most noticeable with their English style long 'a' pronunciation of words like dance, chance etc.. Whereas most Queenslanders will use a short 'a' like the Scots and Irish, dance rhyming with ants.

West Australians would use the word bloke instead of mate, as in g'day bloke. I think that one is relatively new to history and not from the old days.

A couple of South Australians called soft drinks 'cool drinks'. I never knew whether that was a South Australian saying in general, or more related to their remote upbringing in contact with a lot of Aboriginal people.

You could always tell the South Australians who had moved to W.A. to farm. They were the people who talked r-e-a-l s-l-o-w, as compared to the native-born locals. True, it was quite noticeable.
