Tassie isn't a bad place really. It's a bit backward, but I hear that there's a bloke somewhere down there, that's building an airplane. Once they get one of those things, Tasmanians will start catching up with the rest of the world.

Jerry, the lobsters aren't for us common folks. What with the ridiculous price of real estate, and petrol and poor hospitals, we can't afford luxuries like lobster. I generally have to make do with Atlantic Salmon, smoked rainbow trout, Tasmanian scallops, and King Island grass fed beef steaks.

 

Oh, and one of our many local micro distilleries won the world's best single malt whisky, but that's suddenly priced itself off my menu.

I don't class Tas as backward, when it is free from the virus, has reasonably decent environment, clean air and low crime rates. Compared to the never ending debacle going on in Australia of heavy pollution huge crime rates, disgusting environment, filthy air and wall to wall sardine crammed people.

 

I wouldn't eat Atlantic salmon if you paid me, same with farmed trout, not even the farm workers will eat it and I know lots of them. It takes at least 18kg of caught ocean fish to produce 1kg of farmed salmon and the same with trout they use a huge amount of chemicals and antibiotics to control disease and give a false red colour to the fish where the reality it salmon is light pink in its natural state. The colouring they use is red colour dye No2, which is a known carcinogen and banned in many countries. In Tas it's only the urban clones who eat farmed fish, real Tasmanian's either catch it themselves or get it direct from local fishermen.

For many years, world maps didn't show Tasmania at all. We'd like to go back to those days and just drop off the radar. Then we can pull up the drawbridge. So we keep spreading rumours about how terrible Tassie is.

When there's a body of water between land masses, you can't class them as being part of each other. Ever heard of Bass Strait, you may find it's filled with water and separates Aus from Tas. Geologically, Tas is more a part of Canada and Sth America, than Aus.

 

Most real Tasmanian's would love to secede from Aus, but the pollies prefer to be given money rather than work for it and make our island the envy of the world, which it already is in many ways.

The salmon farmed in Tassie is a bad polluter, but the salmon we eat up here in Qld is an altogether different fish environmentally.  Local caught and clean, green.  Lobster in Tassie was over $100 per kg years ago. They get that for it when sent to China or wherever, so they won't sell at less for the locals.

Similar to when i lived in England and produced beef. I never tasted a real steak until I came to Aussie.

Speaking of crays etc. Many moons ago a few of my mates & I used to hire wherever plane/s we could out of YMEN & drive down to YFLI to collect crays straight off the boat.....$5 kilo!! I did say many moons ago😂

Plenty of Tassie devils told me lobster (crayfish) is not to their liking. When you get your own you could get sick of it but it's SO fresh. Lots of seafood is nearly OFF when you get it. Shocking waste. Nev

Mate of mine at work went diving for scallops on the last day of the season and gave me 20.  Doesn't sound like much, but they're about 40g each - these are big, solid fresh scallops, not the tiny little things you get from the supermarket.   I still have 10 in the freezer - 5 of them at a time makes a good meal!

I have had lobster straight off the boat from the fishing co-op at Apollo Bay (years before China had become the devouring consumer of them). Eating them fresh (they were cooked), was something I doubt I could tire from.

 

One of the attractions of returning to Aus is to wet the line to whet the appetite. Fishing here has never really grabbed me that much...

 

You can get fish straight from Billingsgate Market (landed that day), but they are specialist fishmongers, and the cost makes lobster appealing.

More than just lockdown, living in quarantine. Shopping for essentials is particularly difficult. It's bad enough when you can shop around to find what you want if store 1 doesn't have it. But when you have to order online for home delivery, it is very frustrating. For two days my daughter tried to order casserole steak. The local Woolies didn't have any. Day 3 she ordered from Coles. They didn't have any either. Finally got some back at Woolies (hopefully) on day 4. Now Woolies don't have any potatoes. And bananas were also listed not available. And we orderd on Friday morning from Coles, not delivered till after 1.30 pm on Saturday. Had we been able to go out, we had the choice of two Woolies, two Coles and two Aldi, all within 4 km.

No, all the small independent businesses have gone under. Even the local chemist has been taken over by Chemist Warehouse and moved a kilometre further down the road.. Nearest thing to a corner store is 7-Eleven. Used to have a milk bar on the corner of our street, opposite the secondary college. Went out of business years ago, converted into a house. Green grocers - gone. Butchers - gone. There is a tattoo parlor though.

Besides, even if they were there, we couldn't visit them. We are covid positive and not permitted to leave the house. We can only deal with shops who have online ordering and contactless home delivery.
