I'm sure my computer is possessed. I type a post, proof read it and send it. Then I notice that the odd letter has been duplicated, or omitted. I edit the post and correct it, post the edit, then find another error.

Welcome too my nightmare :amazon:

It is usully the letter 'n' which gets duplicated - you've probably noticed it. Other times it gets omitted.

The other problem is that you almost have to pound the '3' key to get it to register, which is difficult when my postcode is 3133, and it is in my password and bank account number. (Had to make 5 corrections when proofreading this.)

Gee , my p c is as bad yours.

Only four corrections,  all from ( mr ) A I .

It thinks it is better than I  & wants to write by itself.

Not what I wished to convey , in my communications.

I finally worked out the update problems I've been having with Firefox browser. For a long time it hasn't been able to update via the browser update notification, so the only way I've been able to do it is to download the new version from the Mozilla website and install it. The only problem with that is that it wiped the new version back to default settings which creates a lot of work to re-customise it. I've now figured that part out. When you launch the new setup, there's a check box checked by default to reset to default settings and delete all add-ons. All you have to do is make sure to uncheck that box before proceeding. I hadn't updated for a long time because of that issue, but it turned out I should have gone to Specsavers.

On the subject of customising browsers, I always prefer the dark theme. I find it a lot easier on the eyes. The green 'JS' icon on the URL toolbar is called Javascript Switcher, one of the add-ons you can get for Firefox to toggle Javascript on and off without having to do it in browser settings. Very handy for getting around paywall sites and getting rid of annoying advertising pop-ups. Javascript switcher is good as it disables Javascript only on the website in which you disable it. You can go back to other tabs and they are not affected. If you leave Javascript disabled on a site, it remembers and will be disabled in future browser sessions. Some other Javascript switcher add-ons are not so good as they disable Javascript globally across all sites you visit which can be annoying, but Javascript Switcher only disables individual sites you select. I wouldn't be without it.

Javascript restricts me to download only one file per session. If I am emailed 2 pdf's for example, I have to download one, log out of the session and log back on. The same applies to two or more videos.

To get around this, my normal browser is Brave, but I also have Chrome with Javascript disabled. If I receive an email with multiple attachments, I activate Chrome and download them there.

My internet service provider for many years has been Internode. Late last year they stopped providing free email service and addresses. They gave customers the option to use another email provider or migrate their existing Internode addresses to The Messaging Company, an Australian email mob. Part of that deal was that it would be free until sometime this year. After that date, migrated customers will have to either find another provider or start paying TMC for the email service. I haven't seen anything about TMC's performance that would make you feel like paying them, so I'm in the process of changing over to the free Google owned one. What a task that is. I've got a big list of accounts I hold which have the Internode address tied to them. Most of them require the email address as part of the login procedure.

Some companies don't have an option to edit the email address, so the only option with those is to set up a completely new account. With others, the changeover procedure takes a fair bit of time. You have to log in to your account then play a game of hide and seek to try to find the right settings. Some sites are so un-intuitave that the quickest way is to google how to find the settings. Once you finally track the settings down, you change the email address and wait for them to send a confirmation email to the new address. With Thunderbird, the quickest way to receive that email is to close Thunderbird then reopen it, in which case it will try to download any new emails. Once you get the confirmation email you might have to only click on a link in the email to verify it. With other sites, you have to copy a code, return to the browser page where you were changing address, then paste the code in a box and proceed from there.

So far, it's three down and a squillion accounts to go. It's going to be a long week. I won't miss the Internode addresses as they have a subdomain in the address added to an already long name. The length of it makes it a pain when you are continually typing it to log in somewhere. Trying to read out the address to someone over the phone is time wasting unless you spell it out in the phonetic alphabet. Internode was taken over by TPG some time back, and sometime this year they will cease to exist and we will be direct TPG customers.

An hour later and I've been able to successfully change the email address in on more account making four in total. Some companies and websites make it extremely difficult to edit your email address. For TV streaming, 9Now was easy. They sent a text message code and it went like clockwork. SBS On Demand on the other hand require you to fill out an online form and submit a request, then wait for who knows how long to get a reply. In the account management section, SBS has the email address locked so you can't edit it. I think it will be easier to just register another account. I've got lots more accounts to change over, so I can see how this is going to pan out. Any accounts that don't have a need of previous history, it would be easier and quicker just to register fresh accounts.

Yes Willie, it's a pity they are all not like this site or recfly. I had a look at my two banks and Facebook, and you need to be a bush lawyer. I realise the banks have to make it difficult for scammers so they don't milk you dry. I have a number of email addresses, some of which nnever get used. Only opened as a requirement of signing up to a website. Most requie the texted code which is pretty much the standard verification method these days.

My first was with Optus, because we they were our ISP and cable TV service when my wife worked for them. The first one used my initial and surname as account name but it would get used maybe once a week, more often just spam. Then I opened one which was a bit more incognito, using my login from this site. Again, gets very little use. My main one is with yahoo.com.au. I also have a gmail.com account, which I only look at once or twice a year. All of them are free.

When it comes to editing an email address associated with an account, what stands out to me is the huge difference between sites. Some are so simple to do, while others make it extremely hard and in some cases impossible, requiring a new account to be registered. I don't know why some low risk sites make the process so difficult. It's not like I'm applying to join the CIA or anything; all I want to do is change a simple email address. You would think that web designers would have the sense to realise that changing an email addresses is a common thing. I've successfully done nine accounts since I started four hours ago. I think I'll just have to chip away at it bit by bit. Lucky I haven't got any hair to tear out, otherwise it would be coming out in handfuls.

On the positive side, as I go through the little black book of account login details and passwords, I'm culling heaps I haven't used for years.

Have you used their "Help" screens and asked how to change/update an email adddress?

I haven't found many help options on the ones so far but I'll keep an eye out for it.

I logged in to inyourfacebook this morning with the new email address. It's a real pleasure to type an eight letter domain name after years of using the fifteen letter one.

After submitting the online form request to SBS on demand, I got a reply back from them. They said they don't have any facility on their site for updating email addresses and could set it up manually by corresponding with them by email and supplying details. I politely told them no thanks and opened up a new account. That's the easiest way with sites where past history with the old account is not important.

OK I am desperate. Today my photos have all departed my computer. Yes they are in the cloud, but the folders have lost their dates. Here is the back story:

New PC laptop computer 18 months ago. All files kept disappearing into the cloud, but I want them on my hard drive to work off line.

Our town has two IT guys, I have paid each of them to come at different times and sort it out but no joy. Our son is an IT specialist, he spent two hours at the beginning of this month trying to sort it out. It all seemed OK for a couple of weeks.

Our son persuaded me to keep the cloud function as backup, he said it would not affect my HD.

Then I went off in the caravan, using my computer off line and on 4G/5G. When I logged on to today on our home network, the Photos folder is not there on my HD. It is not in the Bin. It is in the cloud but has lost the date information from the folders. It must be because I was off line for a couple of weeks.

I would like to disconnect from the cloud. The paid IT guys tried to do that but it keeps coming back and stealing my files.

I am not a computer illiterate, have been managing my own computer as long as there have been desktop computers. What next?

That's strange, I'm the opposite.  Sick of losing stuff when computer hardware fails and you've got it in the shop with some techo trying to extract your precious photos from the hard drive.

Now everything goes to OneDrive and is available for all devices, very easy when you get a new PC to access all your stuff.

I only save photos that I want to post straight away, eg. funny photos for this forum, to my hard drive. Once posted, they can be deleted. All my personal photos, and my aircraft photos for RecFly are saved to an external USB hard drive. Instantly transferrable between PC's.

I now upload my photos to a " DVD " . They're in a box, lets see if they could get stolen by crooked software .
