red750 Posted January 25, 2021 Author Posted January 25, 2021 In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint) 1 2
Old Koreelah Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Apparently NASA has a poster hanging with bees that reads: "Aerodynamically a bee's body is not made to fly; the good thing is that the bee doesn't know". The law of physics says that a bee cannot fly, the aerodynamic principle says that the breadth of its wings is too small to keep its huge body in flight, but a bee doesn’t know, it doesn’t know anything about physics or its logic and flies anyway. This is what we can all do. Fly and prevail in every moment in the face of any difficulty and in any circumstance despite what they say. Let us be bees, no matter the size of our wings, we take flight and enjoy the pollen of life. 1 1
spacesailor Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 So, if l don,t know my aircraft is over it,s MTW l CAN fly !. I just pay the fine ?. spacesailor
nomadpete Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 And nobody will ever find out, because this isn't the flying forum.
Marty_d Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 If a Hummelbird soars above the forest, and nobody tells CASA, did it really happen? 2
nomadpete Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 Of course I'd never condone breaking any laws, but If I lived closer I'd gladly help you push the Hummel out if you needed to do a test taxi trial along a runway.
Bruce Tuncks Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 Good onya spacy. We won't tell and I reckon you should just go and fly it. As for penalties, I would rather go to jail than pay a fine myself. Like being on a cruise except that the stewards would be less polite but the other inmates might have more interesting stories. I don't reckon there is much risk as long as you do it quietly.
spacesailor Posted February 26, 2021 Posted February 26, 2021 (edited) BUT What constitutes " flying " If you bunnihop a fast taxi run ! Did you fly ?. Is there a hight, below which is Not legally Flying ?. If a reason arrives when fast taxying, ( unable to stop before fence ) failed brakes ) wind just,))) Can you do a circuit to Stop a crash ?. Logic says YES. Bureaucrats say " as written in law " safety is Not their consern !. SO NO. spacesailor Edited February 26, 2021 by spacesailor Spelling
Old Koreelah Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 The fun police are probably reading this...
facthunter Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 The more technicolour Yawns you will have. I wasn't going to bring that one up but less of better is the go. Use the other for cooking sausages on a barbecue. Red wine on Sausages. Mmmm. Nev

Bruce Tuncks Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Spacy just take it out and do some fast taxi runs. If all is well, do some lil hops. Have fun.
spacesailor Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Bureaucracy It Can be fixed, By more Bureaucracy. If l peel the lower wing skin back, it boubles that wing area, that the bureaucrats live by. No weight gain, will it fly ,. who cares, the Bureaurocrats, will be apeased. Single skin wings are Old school, all the early hangliders had them. BUT DANGEROUSE spacesailor
Bruce Tuncks Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Well I'm very naive and think that most bureaucrats are ok guys deep down. If you do something quietly, they are free to pretend that they didnt know. A bit like if you know of a guy cheating on his wife. She may actually know, but as long as it is not out in the open she can ignore it. You do her a great disservice by telling her. Yep, the odd bureaucrat ( like the odd policeman ) is a fool and a bully, but you would be real unlucky to strike one. So go ahead with those fast runs spacy.
Bruce Tuncks Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Old K, that is a great poster about bees disobeying the laws of physics, but it just isn't true. It was based on a misunderstanding of how bees actually flew. 1
Old Koreelah Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 19 hours ago, spacesailor said: Bureaucracy It Can be fixed, By more Bureaucracy... Unfortunately true. When I have reported poor service in hospitals, govt. departments, etc. too often the official response is to add yet more procedures and checklists, rather that freeing up dedicated professionals to actually get on with their job.
facthunter Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Plenty of silly OLD "B"s about. A Boeing sized BEE wouldn't fly. It's about Reynolds number (Scale effect) Same with flat thin section wings. Apart from not having enough strength It will not lift at any real angle.. It works on a small chuck glider. The best performing wings go on competition gliders .Nev
old man emu Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 In 1996 scientists discovered that the movement of a bee's wings produces Leading Edge Vortices, which are how they fly. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Bumblebee-stroke-sequence-in-forwards-flight-with-arrowed-smokelines-visualizing-points_fig1_286740476 1 1
Bruce Tuncks Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Thanks OME. The "laws" of physics are not like our criminal laws. They are just a description of what ALWAYS happens.
red750 Posted March 9, 2021 Author Posted March 9, 2021 Have you ever sent a lenghty text and later decided you wanted to send the same message to someone else? Did you know that you don't have to retype it? View the message and hold your finger on it for a couple of seconds. A screen will appear which will let you copy the message. Return to the home page, open a fresh text and select the new addressee. Press in the data entry box and hold for a second. A flag letting you paste will appear. Press on it and the message will be pasted. To change a word, or correct spelling, etc., tap on the word and a cursor line will appear. Hold your finger on the entry box and slide it left or right to position the cursor line after the word to be changed. Tap the backspace key to delete the word/name, and enter the required info. 1
red750 Posted August 15, 2022 Author Posted August 15, 2022 I didn't read through 7 pages to check, so this list may have been posted before, but here are names for some items you may not know had names.
facthunter Posted August 15, 2022 Posted August 15, 2022 The top ones are also known as "CAPITAL" letters. Nev
