Unfortunately for the believers, there is more evidence for the almighty, or not so almighty, asterisk, than the deity people seem to want to dedicate their everything to....

One hypothesis to the origin of the asterisk is that it stems from the five thousand year old Sumerian character dingir,

 

Dingir (usually transliterated diĝir, pronounced /diŋir/) is a Sumerian word for "god." Its cuneiform sign is most commonly employed as the determinative for "deity" although it has related meanings as well. As a determinative, it is not pronounced, and is conventionally transliterated as a superscript "D" as in e.g. DInanna. Generically, dingir can be translated as "god" or "goddess".[1]

 

The sign in Sumerian cuneiform (DIĜIR, )[2] by itself represents the Sumerian word an ("sky" or "heaven"),[3] the ideogram for An or the word diĝir ("god"), the supreme deity of the Sumerian pantheon. The way I see it is that there can be passive resentment and active resentment.

 

I wont waste my time sitting around stewing about it, but if someone asks me how I feel about it, makes a statement that I think needs to be addressed or is trying to pump young minds full of sky fairy belief, then I will speak out. Much the same as you would against child abuse, or poor aircraft maintenance, etc.

There was a time when putting your religion down as "atheist" could cost you dearly. You could lose out at work or socially and your family could suffer too.

 

It is still like this in the USA.

 

So there were many people who were really atheists but you would never get them to admit it.

 

There are some jobs where you would still suffer. I know a private school headmaster who can't even admit to himself that he doesn't believe the stuff he espouses.
