hihosland Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 And this fits with the notion of a god how?
old man emu Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 Unfortunately for the believers, there is more evidence for the almighty, or not so almighty, asterisk, than the deity people seem to want to dedicate their everything to.... One hypothesis to the origin of the asterisk is that it stems from the five thousand year old Sumerian character dingir, Dingir (usually transliterated diĝir, pronounced /diŋir/) is a Sumerian word for "god." Its cuneiform sign is most commonly employed as the determinative for "deity" although it has related meanings as well. As a determinative, it is not pronounced, and is conventionally transliterated as a superscript "D" as in e.g. DInanna. Generically, dingir can be translated as "god" or "goddess".[1] The sign in Sumerian cuneiform (DIĜIR, )[2] by itself represents the Sumerian word an ("sky" or "heaven"),[3] the ideogram for An or the word diĝir ("god"), the supreme deity of the Sumerian pantheon. In Assyrian cuneiform, it (AN, DIĜIR, ) could be either an ideogram for "deity" (ilum) or a syllabogram for an, or ìl-. In Hittite orthography, the syllabic value of the sign was again an. OME
IBob Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 It's not another example of the Lord working in mysterious ways is it? Nev No, Nev, it was me un-following this thread, and I couldn't see a way to do that without also posting something. Now I'll have to do it again. Because while resentment is a perfectly legitimate emotion, sustained resentment is a waste of time and energy, and worse. It is, as the late Carrie Fisher said, like drinking poison, then waiting for the other party to die. And it seems to me there's a great deal of it here. *
facthunter Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 You can get something out of resentment /hate/ revenge instincts. OUTLIVE the bastards and go to their funeral to make sure they really are dead. Nev
facthunter Posted January 27, 2017 Posted January 27, 2017 It's an ILL wind that blows nobody any good they say. The bagpipes are "an ILL wind that nobody blows any good". Nev

I wont waste my time sitting around stewing about it, but if someone asks me how I feel about it, makes a statement that I think needs to be addressed or is trying to pump young minds full of sky fairy belief, then I will speak out. Much the same as you would against child abuse, or poor aircraft maintenance, etc.

nomadpete Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 I'd rather believe in the power of the asterisk...... But I can't prove it works.

OUTLIVE the bastards and go to their funeral to make sure they really are dead. Nev Nev I agree with IBob, but forgiving lowlife, p1ssweak people is not easy when they don't care. Sociopaths don't waste time with regret and are likely to outlive those they screw over.

Bruce Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 I quite like some of the disagreements. I still hope to find a creationist who will actually argue back, while I make fun of his ideas. So far, no luck. I still want to know if a creationist thinks the firmament is a danger to Jabirus.
IBob Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Here y'are....something to cheer you lot up....)

IBob Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Why do women's bums look so good to me? We dunno...is this a quiz???
nomadpete Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Same reason some women look so much more attractive when they are leaving.......... You can't hear them talking Sorry, disregard that, I'm just bitter and twisted. And now I'm doomed to an eternity of unspeakable fire and brimstone if my lovely wife ever reads this.....
Marty_d Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Why do women's bums look so good to me? I think the "to me" in that sentence is superfluous.

PA. Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 We are now the forth most popular religion. Watch out Catholics, you are next on our list.
Bruce Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 There was a time when putting your religion down as "atheist" could cost you dearly. You could lose out at work or socially and your family could suffer too. It is still like this in the USA. So there were many people who were really atheists but you would never get them to admit it. There are some jobs where you would still suffer. I know a private school headmaster who can't even admit to himself that he doesn't believe the stuff he espouses.
