Marty you have just made statements that are not based on empirical (verified by observation) or measurable evidence.

Vertebrate fish first appeared about 530 million years ago. Dinosaurs lived and evolved from 250 million years ago (where is the observable or measurable evidence for 250 million years?)

The measurable evidence is in the fossil record.

and lasted until about 63 million years ago (who observed this?)

You just said science doesn't actually have to be personally observed but can be based on measurement, and now you're demanding observations? The measurable evidence is in the fossil record.

They didn't come down from the trees until 2 million years ago (where is the observable or measurable evidence for 2 million years?),

In the fossil record for the 3rd time!

and our own particular species has only been around for about 200,000 years (where is the observable or measurable evidence for 0.2 million years?).

In............the.............fossil............record.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I find myself looking forward to the posts on this thread.

Yeah, it does sometimes bog down in the eternal "is there, isn't there a god" argument. But that is easily ignored by both sides. That's not what the thread subject is about. It is about "Knowledge".

There have been many thought provoking posts and plenty that have sent me scurrying to verify or read more about - which brings more knowledge. Gotta love that.

Some good light hearted humour too.

So, thank you Gnarly. You did well by getting us thinking, and enjoying knowledge.

One of the problems with evolution vs creationist arguments is that the creationist side pretty much dismisses with a wave of the hand a couple of hundred years of rapidly increasing scientific knowledge and tens of thousands of hours of accumulated scientific field work by geologists, palaeontologists, etc under the guise of "nup....didn't happen.....and even if it did they're wrong".

As the saying goes: "show me a fossilised bunny in the pre-Cambrian and I'll admit all of our current scientific knowledge on the topic is wrong".

Alas, while many Cambrian and pre-Cambrian fossils have been found, unsurprisingly none of them are rabbits.

They recently discovered a fossil apostle with a colossal tossle. All the proof I need.

If he had a colossal tossle then why was he an apostle? Mind you I guess someone might say the same of Gene Simmons in another couple of thousand years.

Why is this so hard for people to understand? I perform an expermeint and observe a results. I do it another 20 times and I see the same result. Someone else does the same experiemnt, gets the same result..

Its like the old electricity argument. Cant see it, but I can assure you that my indirect observations of the buttons I press on my keyboard and the letters that appear on the screen that its a fairly repeatable indirect observations. Its the same indirect observations that allows me as an electrical engineer to design the stuff that the modern day creationists use to shun guys like me!

Michael Faraday, the "Father of Electricity" firmly believed that God created everything so I am not sure where you are coming from Pearo. See: About us | The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion

Hardly relevant. Michael Faraday lived from 1791 - 1867, a period in time when pretty much everyone believed in the supernatural, or if they didn't, they kept it very quiet for fear of ostracism.

It has only become, in recent times, safe to declare that you are an atheist. Even in my time in the workforce , saying this might have cost you a job or a promotion. This could cost you many thousands of dollars.

But I have never actually met a true believer... does such a person really exist? There are plenty of untrue believers, they fill jobs like at religious schools. But true ones? Well I would like to meet one.

Bless you my son.

I think Australia is actually fairly tolerant towards that and has been for a while now. Certainly in the general workplace at least. In the USA however, it's a different story all together.

For a start, if you run for any sort of public office, you do not declare or admit or even hint at atheism!

I reckon you are quite bit younger than me Dutch. Atheists were considered like communists in the 1950's. In fact , they had this term "atheistic communism". Not the sort of person you would employ.

If I were a true believer, I would be busting to die, just like my friends who love cruises are busting to go on the next one.

Like I said, I have yet to meet a true believer. I dunno if Turbs is putting his hand up for consideration or not, but I doubt if he would pass muster.

So, he was right about some things and wrong about others. No one is perfect. If he had used the same scientific process that he used to discover electricity and applied that to his God theory, he would have discovered that there was no testable or repeatable empirical evidence for a God.

If you were open minded enough to do the same, you would also come to the same conclusion.

One of the more intellectually lacking army trainees did a similar thing with a 4 litre can of red paint the other day, having just loosened the lid, he then picked it up and turned it sideways to read the instructions on the can.

If you are feeling brave, try this..... just go up to somebody who is walking around with a cup of coffee in their hand. Smile sweetly and say " Hey, what's that stuck to the bottom of your cup?"

It's a good IQ test
