turboplanner
Good point Nomad, and he would have been providing updates and electronic versions with Youtube examples, but he hasn't and there's a good chance that Moses decided his Israelites needed some mentoring and chiselled a few ideas. He wasn't all that smart; played around with the Ark of the Covenant, which we know was a capacitor and burned half his face of, having to wear a leather cover over it for the rest of his life. Bruce
Those old tribal scribes had no idea of how big the universe really is. Gosh more suns than all the grains of sand in all the beaches and deserts on the earth. And now it seems that planets are the norm rather than the exception. So asking a human to chisel the ten commandments is silly. Anyway, careful reading of the Bible will show that the number is more like 600 commandments. The puritans tried ( they said) to follow them all but their history shows they were very selective.

nomadpete
Bruce, you are thinking of the 613 Judaic commands of the Torah. Those came 300 years is so after J.C.'s time. Via Moses. Apparently Christians had a shorter memory than Jews, and stuck with just 10 commandments. I personally filter all that down to one basic rule. "Don't be an a55hole" It works for me. Bruce
Here's the big question I have never had a good answer to... How can you differentiate between pretense to believe and real belief? If I was to become the Pope, how could I come out as an atheist and keep my job? Better to pretend to believe, I reckon. Well I don't really know the Pope that well, but I did know a few teachers at a Christian school. What can you do to find out if they really believe their stuff?
nomadpete
It mostly doesn't matter where their belief sits on their integrity scale - as long as they claim to "be" of a religion, they will contribute to the collective damage being done to young minds. I suspect that a majority of "religious" folk just go along with what was around them as kids, as then they don't have to think too much about it and can Focus more immediate stuff of life. It's human nature to take the easy options. Combine that with a tad of"Holden vs Ford" fervour. (Meaning A vs T.)
Marty_d
Saw a good quote in a novel yesterday ("Red Country" by Joe Abercrombie) - "If there was a God, the world seemed exactly the way it would be if there wasn't one."
bexrbetter
"If there was a God, the world seemed exactly the way it would be if there wasn't one." Nope, the gloating would be unbearable, 100 times worse than it is now with no proof at all.
facthunter
I can't see the justification for the hate directed towards Infidels. They are going to hell anyhow for their lack of belief so surely that is enough punishment from the creator of all things who is perfect in every way, and whose actions can't be questioned or you would be an infidel yourself. Is god to be surrounded in Paradise with murderers and those who have committed suicide? (which is supposed to be a mortal sin ). and people consumed by hate. Sounds like Hell for God to me especially with all the copulation with virgins going on.. What a lot of rot. Nev
nomadpete
Yeah, Nev. sounds like heaven is going to be too noisy and dangerous for me, what with all those bigoted judgemental copulaters carrying on all day. They could get nasty when they run out of virgins. And once you get there, you're stuck with it for eternity. I don't recall any options mentioned in the good book. Please include me out. Bruce
Here's a possible situation: An atheist is being tried in a theocracy. The judge, prosecutor and executioner are all secretly atheists, but on the outside they are all devout. So they kill the only honest one?
