Atheist knowledge

I don't have any idea one way or the other, so I'm sending my wife to China next year for a fact-finding mission (otherwise called a Yangtze River cruise). Unfortunately this means I'll be looking after the kids for 3 weeks while she kicks back with her sister. spacer.png

It is THE GOOD book The word of God. (The devils in the detail). Nev

Another falsification FH, It is not THE GOOD book and it is not the word of God......unless you're different to the rest of us and have found a foreword or a few Chapters by God.

You're statement blows straight back in your face.

Marty, we did that and a lot more in 2007. Unfortunately, I picked up a very unsavoury respiratory bug in Beijing and I needed intravenous antibiotics during the Yangtze cruise. Worked very well and I went from death's door (no exaggeration) to fully recovered very quickly. When we got back to Aus, we read about the antibiotics scandal! Moral is, take Aussie antibiotics with you and of course only use them under medical supervision.

Things may have improved on the pharmaceuticals front but wise always to travel with quality antibiotics. I was treated by a local Doctor on the cruise and he was 1st class.

To many it is "THE" Good book. Not A good book. The status is in the eye of the believers (as is the Koran). I personally don't credit either with that status, for many reasons, one being who wrote and who prints them and their ability to be interpreted in so many ways to excuse any behaviour you choose. Nev

Clearly, Turbs, you have not been reading the assertions of the gnarly one who claims it is the irrefutable (inspired) words of God. Not my personal view of course but that has been what the argument started out about.

Definitely not fair to dump on the venerable hunter of facts.

Well if is to you then say so; don't drag the rest of us into the BS

Are you setting yourself up as arbiter of the discussion? Some of what I write is obviously too subtle for you, or my style irritates you. My position as an atheist has been made clear, frequently, and I assert my right to say what I want to subject to the rules of the forum, as I would for others whether their views are popular or not. Nev.

Hey! We're up to page 100 of this most educational thread!

And somebody started it by querying a connection between atheism and knowledge? There has been a lot of thought provoking knowledge shared here and, for me, it has been much more worthy than reading that other 'Never ending Story'!

It's time to start running book on who gets to post the 2000th comment.

We might call that a 'good book'

No I'm not an arbiter of the discussion - don't try to squirm out of it - what you said was: "It is THE GOOD book The word of God. (The devils in the detail)"

That's a definitive statement which is BS, so don't attack my beliefs with false information!

Thanks for that Don, will pass on your advice. She's a pharmacist so she'll know what antibiotics she should take.

Oh, Dazza, you really know how to keep a thread going! That should be good for another thousand or so posts, now.

Mate send her here, most welcome. I'm not far from the Yangtze, about 2 hours drive in a few directions.

I've been meaning to do the Shanghai to Chongqing cruise (3 days).

I needed intravenous antibiotics during the Yangtze cruise.

The old drip. They rarely give you anti-biotics in pill form, they just throw you on a drip, very common here and man does it ever work fast! I've been on 4 times for serious flu/colds and 4 or 5 hours later nothing!

So if its not "The good book" and its not "the word of god", then what is it?

Some scholars think yes, but I do recall hearing something on the radio just recently that suggests no.

Was/is God real ? yes/no

The lack of evidence to support a 'god' suggests no. Furthermore, the empirical evidence we have these days contradicts a lot of what the bible says, and the bible is the only 'evidence' of a god, and use the word evidence in this context very loosely.

Is the Bible fact or fiction or based on a true story ? Yes/no/ maybe

Once again, there are events written in the bible that various scientists think may have occurred. Real events that may have occurred but we now have logical reasons for them that are not attributed to punishment by a god. Its hard to research bible fact these days, as there is so much rubbish perpetuated by so called religious scholars trying to justify that a god exists.

Sometimes I think it would be nice if it was true. Both good and bad people would get their reward. ( as they deserve). Being serious, the world and the universe as we know it, is so amazing in it's shear dimension and variation and complexity. There is always more to discover, the more you look. I wish I had the curiosity that I have now when I was younger, when I sort of specialised in mechanical stuff, made of metal mainly. Nev

If you want to be inspired by the universe, watch anything done by Brian Cox. Loved the recent "Human Universe" series, although I suspect it was all just an excuse for Brian to visit exotic locations around the world and get paid for it.
