The phrase is - The (k)night is young.

A different tack.

There is much confusion over something that should be unquestioned, mathematics.

Answer this problem:      -9 ÷ 3 - 3 - 3 x  0

This is the conundrum.

Processing left to right,   7-7 = 0, 0x0 = 0,  0 + 7 = 7.

However, Americans, and I guess some others are taught that the order of processing is PEMDAS. The order is PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division (from left to right), Addition, and Subtraction (from left to right).

So, doing multiplication first, 7 x 0 is 7.  This makes the question  7 - 0 + 7, resulting in 14.

So a simple sum here results in 7, but in America it is 14.    How does that work? incidentally, putting this sum into the calculator on your iPhone gives the answer 14.

That's correct, but it depend where the X 0 occurs. It applies to the value before the X, not the whole sum.

Here's another example.

Left to right, it's   9 - 2  =  7  X  4  =  28.

Using PEMDAS,  2 X  4  = 8,   9  -  8  =  1

Who said it was? We do trade with America and purchase goods from America. With such differences in processing a basic such as mathematics how can we agree and standardise on anything?

Here we go again. You complain if anyone questions your posts, but you keep doing it.

Show where I said they were right. I raised it as a situation which many may not be aware of. If you rely on the calculator app on your phone, you may get results that disagree with what we would expect. I think that's worth raising. Who else agrees with me? Education without accusation.

YOU DID make the statement 7x0 is  7 which it is not. I just  now identified it by a "confused " back about 9  posts if you'd care to look. . Yeah, keep painting ME as a  problem. . That works great.. Nev
