pmccarthy
Castlemaine XXXX was a brand invented in the mid 19th century just up the road from me in Castlemaine Victoria. It was so good the Banana Benders bought it and took it home, then stuffed up the recipe.

eightyknots
I thought they called it XXXX because they couldn't spell "beer" Perhaps they could have spelled it initially but, after an XXXX, another XXXX, another XXXX, another XXXX, another XXXX, etc, they forgot how to spell it. Guest Andys@coffs
Smart people learn from their own mistakes, really smart folk learn from others mistakes......To drink 5 XXXX in a row suggests that learning might be a slow process....... Nobody lives long enough to make all the mistakes themselves. A lot of mistakes will kill you quicker than 5 doses of XXXX.
ayavner
Or home brew, home brew is cheap but it gets the job done. I've got a nice Pale Ale in secondary fermentation now, can't wait to see how it turns out!
ExJourno
Still have XXX, out of date though it may be... At Milton brewery one can still purchase a glass of XXX on tap. It's lovely. XXXX has nothing on XXX.

Marty_d
Well it is pretty good beer...... Nev It is pretty good.... now. Go back a few years and it was a toss-up between XXXX and West End Draught as to which tasted worse - the best way to use either was to buy a glass and tip it straight down the urinal. Major faults with your closing statement Marty. Whilst 4X & West End Draught may not have been the ultimate in brews, they are like nooky "when it's good it's very, very good and when it's bad, it's still pretty good". pmccarthy
I grew up on West End (and the higher alcohol version Southwark Premium) It is different and not great, I think it is the Lower Murray water! All other beers taste the same to me.
turboplanner
Ah, West End, 270 million cattle can't be wrong. Marty, we've never seen much Boags over here, but in the last twelve months or so, they've been running some clever ads - interesting to see what that's done to the market share. Marty_d
I'm surprised at you Marty with Bogs being made from stream water......just downstream from Hobart. Wrong end of the state TP, Boags is made at Launceston, it's Cascade which is made in South Hobart. Both are perfectly acceptable but my preference is Boags. When we were living in Dundalk, Ireland, I was happy as a pig in poop to discover a local bottleshop imported Boags Premium. (Unlike my wife I'm not a fan of Guinness!) Marty, we've never seen much Boags over here, but in the last twelve months or so, they've been running some clever ads - interesting to see what that's done to the market share. Are those the ones where anything that falls in the river comes out better?
Marty_d
time for some fwoar I love how they've been caught out doing every single thing they beat the previous government over the head for doing. facthunter
We found that certain beers were always the last to be ordered on the up the centre F 27 runs ex ADL. That would have to be proof of popularity or not. Territorians know about BEER ...Nev
