Joe has finally seen the writing on the wall and decided to pull out and endorse Kamala. The question is whether she or anyone else can make much difference.

Woman + Black + Asian = I don't like her chances. If the Democrats want a decent shot at winning the election, then they need to be brutal - not many voters like the idea of candidates parachuted in to save the day. It is widely known - up until now - that this was to be the election of candidates very few wanted. Democrats have to find someone that can resonate with the electorate - and can beat Trump at his own game. It really should be that simple for them.

If nothing else they are now in with a decent chance of giving Trump a run for his money. With Joe they had no chance. I think the Democrats may invite challengers to her nomination but there won’t be any takers. If she picks a running mate from one of the key states it could be a good combination. If she challenges Trump to weekly debates like he bragged he would with Joe it could get interesting. Trump couldn’t handle risking losing a debate to a much younger woman of colour.

If you look at Trump's crowds and the Republican National Convention crowds there's a high proportion of white people, and fairly high male to female ratio.

However the US is a very multicultural society so perhaps a female candidate with Indian and Jamaican/African heritage will pick up a lot more votes from the non-white groups.

It all depends how the Democrats advertise her.  Things like "Your choice - the prosecutor or the convicted felon" would be a good one.  Reminding women of Trump's behaviour with women and his hand in taking away their power over their own bodies would be another.

That's his typical put-down of women, and will be his downfall. If she plays that card, and the GOP attitude to sexuality (there are only two genders) and women's reproductive rights, she will cream him.

 

I reckon, in some photos, J. D. Vance looks like Bruce Lehrmann. He's no better than Trump, saying women should stay with their husband, even if they are being bashed, That will win him a lot of friends.

While Biden has endorsed Harris she is not the presumptive candidate. There are at least half a dozen others that look like throwing their hats in the ring. A lot can happen in the month before the Democratic convention. They can spend up as well with more than 50 million being donated on Sunday. I doubt Trump has managed anywhere near that amount in the same timeframe.

Harris seems to have the backing of those African Americans who don't follow fundamentalist Christianity. She should also be supported by liberal whites who reject Trump's ideas. One wonders who the Spanish will support. I can't see them being MAGA nuts.

The bottom line with American elections is the result is based almost entirely on how many people actually vote.

When the candidates are pretty ordinary, the % of voters who actually turn out to vote, reaches new lows.

Another weird thing is that the winner is not the person who receives the most votes nationwide, but who wins the most Electoral College members. Each State has a set number of Electoral College members, but the numbers differ from State to State. Texas has 40, California 54, Florida 30, New Your 28. Most States have less than 10. Of the current 538 electors, a simple majority of 270 or more electoral votes is required to elect the president and vice president.

 

This diagram indicates which Party won which State in the four elections since 2008. The red and shades of red are Republican (Trump) while the blue are Democrats (Harris). The purple ones have been won twice each in those elections. The purple ones are the swing States, Florida, Iowa and Ohio.

I feel sorry for Joe Biden and his state of health. He put up a brave front in his address to the nation, but unfortunately he can't take his eyes off the teleprompter and there was zero eye contact with the camera. It was sad to watch. Without the teleprompter he's barely coherent which was the case with the following press conference. When he loses his train of thought mid sentence he just throws another point in preceded by the word 'Look,'. He'll have enough work to do keeping up to things in the next six months. Expecting him to be mentally able to be president of the US for another four and a half years was just ridiculous. Hopefully it's just age related memory loss and not the start of something more sinister like Alzheimer's disease. Sometimes people can get to the stage Joe is at now and not get any worse. In rare cases they can improve with environmental factors like being in a less stressful situation. Hopefully he'll pick up a bit when he retires and gets some rest.
