Look up the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio. It's all to do with numbers and ratios. It's very clever, really - and I've never come across this puzzle before Red750 produced it. Good one.

I reckon Nev's right.  6 and 7 are pretty small and if you imagine their area stretched to go around the circumference of 1-5, they wouldn't add much.  It's pretty loose on the first fit and tight as a Scotsman's wallet on the last.
