There was video footage of one going down a couple of days ago but it wasn't verified regarding the date. If they are verified, it brings up the question of what they are using to bring them down as the latest two were in the Azov Sea 80 klm from the nearest Ukrainian lines. 1

nomadpete
Yes, I am especially curious about what has changed to account for the sudden Ukrainian successes. I guess I'm not alone.
willedoo
A bit of chatter on social media has speculated that they've moved a Patriot system close to the front. That would be a big risk as they are vulnerable to a certain degree and highly valued. I can't see how they'd risk a Patriot system in the hope of getting the odd plane. willedoo
Russian press is reporting that the Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine with the Mi-8 helicopter has been found dead in Spain. They're saying he was shot 12 times and run over with a car. Sounds like either the Russians found him or he stood on the toes of the local gangsters. 1
willedoo
I think Spain is a fairly popular place for ex-pat Russians. Maybe not a smart place for a traitor to go to.
pmccarthy
He was given one million dollars for handing over the chopper. Perhaps he was carrying it in diamonds.
spenaroo
In January 2023, the United States announced it would transfer Sea Sparrow missiles to Ukraine as part of a military aid package during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Sea Sparrows are fired from Soviet-era 9K37 Buk missile launchers modified by Ukraine to accept them, to counter attacks from cruise missiles and drones. The system, dubbed "FrankenSAM", utilizes three different air defense missiles—RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, plus Patriot missiles and Patriot sensor elements—in combination air defense systems based on older Ukrainian tracked vehicles and the Buk missile system.[14] FrankenSAM was confirmed to be in use in December 2023, and was first used successfully in combat to bring down a Russian drone in mid-January 2024 1
onetrack
You've got the news all wrong about the defected Russian helicopter pilot. The Russians say his death was staged by the Ukrainians, so he could truly disappear without trace. So now we know the truth, it was all an elaborate setup.

Why, Why do Russians think this is a better angle for propaganda. surely you would want all your troops to think the traitor was hunted down and killed mercilessly. its a massive win for sending a message. instead saying its a conspiracy and staged. basically admits that a defector was successful and paid a fortune.... and then well looked after and hidden so well that there is no consequences. surely this is the worst message to put to demoralized and jaded troops. its like the "Ukrainians didn't kill us, it was friendly fire" that makes it so much worse 1
onetrack
They won't do that, because it leaves the Kremlin admitting they kill people who oppose them - and they'd never do anything like that, they're such nice people!
Marty_d
Like Navalny - the story from the Kremlin is he died of "sudden death syndrome". Generally brought on by a couple of rounds to the back of the neck.

nomadpete
My wife reckons it couldn't have been the Russians. The poor bugger's wife tracked him down. The Russians wouldn't waste 12 rounds on him but his wife might.

spenaroo
problem is how it effects Russian's in foreign nations, its one thing to kill inside Russia, or have a cup of radioactive tea. thats all targeted and "controlled" 12 shots isn't. that's not a hit-job, that's not calculated. that's just violence could be a spark a movement for anti-Russian settlements in country's. I know Bali and a few others already have issues and want them out. Edited February 20 by spenaroo 1
nomadpete
When hubby left the country with 12 million in his pocket, wife has a big motive. If it was the Kremlin's work it wouldn't take 12 shots and the run over to make sure. Kremlin only need a cup of tea to do it.
