Russia deploys missile defense systems on island near Japan, vows 'round-the-clock watch'

Russia’s Defense Ministry has released new images showing its military deploying mobile missile defense systems on an island near Japan that is part of a disputed territory.

The rollout occurred on the northern Kuril island of Paramushir, one of a chain of islands between Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula and Japan. Tokyo has laid claim to the southern Kuril Islands – which Russia considers to be their own – in an ongoing territorial dispute dating back to World War II, according to Reuters.

Russia declared war on Japan after the German surrender in 1945 & quickly took the Kuril Islands that were part of Japan & they have never given them back. Japan & Russia signed a joint declaration in 1956 ending their state of war but never signed a Peace Treaty. The Soviet Union offered Japan the 2 small Southern islands of the Kuril Group in return for japan renouncing claim to the 2 bigger islands. Japan refused this and the dispute continues to this day.

Gosh those japanese were mugs huh....  The germans had tried but failed to get the japanese to attack russia from the east. Instead the stupid japanese attacked the US at pearl Harbour.

They were being loyal to their treaties with the russians, and they got a bad surprise when the russians ignored these same treaties.

I don't think the Germans would have won given the entry of the US. They would have entered later anyway even if Pearl Harbour had not provide the first reason. The industrial output alone from America would have worn the Germans down eventually along with constant bombing from the RAF, the massive resource of people in the USSR, the vastness of the country logistically and the Russian winter. The war may have gone on for another year or 2  but of course after mid 45 there was the atom bomb.

Plenty of commentators have expressed the view that Russia's gaining of territory from Japan and it's likely treatment of the emperor compared with America to be more significant that the dropping of the atomic Bombs. McArthur became a bit of a hero with the Japanese.   Nev

I think the Lend Lease deal with supplying King Cobras to the USSR had a condition that they were for the Far East, and were not to be used against Germany. It appears the Soviets did use some of them against the Germans, according to reports from German pilots.

I recon with all the phosphorous incendiary munitions the Russians are using, there's a real need for a light, burn resistant sheet the troops can quickly pull over themselves to minimise burns. It would have to be light and be able to be folded up and stored in an easily accessible pocket or pouch in their gear.

Russia has been forced to deny reports that Vladimir Putin fell down stairs and soiled himself last week. Putin, 70, allegedly slipped coming down stairs at his Moscow home, bruised his tail-bone, and - because of the effects of colon cancer - 'involuntarily defecated,' according to Telegram channel General SVR which claims links to his guards. The Press and Information Office of the President of the Russian Federation, asked about the story, has now responded: 'Regarding your request, we can say that this is completely untrue.'

It wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't true. The only source is the word of one Telegram blogger. It's been reported worldwide by the MSM, but they've all been careful to add the disclaimer of crediting the Telegram channel source.

It's a good example of the state of news reporting today. A blogger only has to make a statement on social media and it suddenly becomes world wide news. Having said that, it could possibly be true, but it can't be verified. The fact that most journalists respect the privacy of their sources also creates a big grey area in news reporting today. The line between rumour and truth can get blurred. One of their favourites is the old line 'according to three persons familiar with the matter'. So do journalists talk to a group of three unknown blokes, or are they trying to hint it's credible because three separate unlinked people all told the same story, therefore it must be true.

The media often works on the principle that their audience will believe what they want to believe. Personally, I'd like to believe Putler fell arse over and crapped his duds.

There's a lack of good investigative journalism in the main stream media these days. Most of them are bone lazy and just re-report someone else's news. I would guess that a lot of lazy MSM journalists sit at their desk and trawl through social media posts for something to report on. If they find something entertaining, they will report on it and credit the source. What happens next is that even lazier MSM journalists re-report what the first one got from social media, so it spreads and becomes worldwide news. It's the main stream media version of re-Tweeting. I'm not being intentionally critical of them; it's just the way news is in the world.

Vladimir Putin’s cronies have a secret plan to help him flee to South America if Russia loses the war in Ukraine, a former ally claims.

Report here.

I noticed this quote in the article - "The Russian president said his military would ‘defend ourselves with all the means at our disposal’ but added ‘we haven’t gone mad, we realise what nuclear weapons are".

I recon that would be in response to the Russian media hardline nutters who have been calling on Russia to nuke Germany, the U.K., and other western supporters of Ukraine. The worst offender is that fool Vladimir Solovyov who belongs in a mental institution.

Responding to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's comments about a negotiated end to the war, Ukraine's Secretary of National Security said, "To end the war, Ukraine does not need a negotiating table. Putin's surrender can be accepted standing up."

A new video of an allegedly “drunk” Vladimir Putin admitting to ongoing strikes on Ukraine has gone viral, with many people viewing the footage as a sign Russia is losing the war.

Who started it he says! That's funny. He did in 2014 by annexing Crimea & militarily supporting the separatists in Donetsk & of course invading Ukraine this year. Everything else is Ukraine defending it's territory & depleting Russian supply lines & the dickhead is upset about it. Yes he knows he is losing.

American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was sentenced to nine years jail in Russia, is free after a prisoner exchange. They swapped her for famous arms dealer Victor Bout, who was doing a twenty five year sentence in the U.S.. I wonder if the Russians will get Victor to restart his old trade and help them acquire some much needed weaponry.

I think he says it to fool themselves into believing it.. Just like the west fooled themselves into believing the cold war was over and they could do business with Putin: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/12/08/cold-war-never-ended-says-angela-merkel-admits-germany-should/

Moscow burning. This is the Mega shopping centre at Khimki, an outer suburb of Moscow. Before the war, the Russian news would report a newsworthy fire about once a week. Now it's happening nearly every day and sometimes more than one major fire per day. They are mainly military related or industrial infrastructure fires, but lately shopping centres have been going up in flames in well. Some may be accidental, but there's too many now to discount a significant partisan involvement.

Vladimir Putin had been due to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month. However, in a sign of growing Russian isolation on the world stage, an Indian government source said the meeting has now been abruptly cancelled. The move to cancel the annual face-to-face meeting was taken after veiled threats by Vladimir Putin to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war.

Freed Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout said in an interview that he wholeheartedly supports Moscow's so-called war in Ukraine and that if he had the opportunity and necessary skills, he would go as a volunteer. I doubt Putler would send Viktor to the front line. Russia needs arms and Viktor probably still has a lot of his old contacts. I'm sure they'll put him to good use as a supplier.
