When my son was 17 or so, I paid him $1000 a year to not start drinking. He ( son ) says it didn't hurt him socially at all, as his mates liked having a sober driver to take them home.

The daughter says I ruined his social life. I reckon his social life is ok...

Well they are both about 50 now and the son still doesn't drink. But he denies the 1000 dollar payments had anything to do with his decision. He says it was the bad example I set.
