I've found the black poly jerrycans are superior to the steel ones. The steel ones are prone to internal corrosion and pinholes due to vibration. However, the originals certainly were the dux nutz in the era before advanced plastics.

I just found a jerry can that was made in 1952. It is still in good condition. Those original ones were properly made. Some time later, the design was copied, but the ones made then did not follow the design to keep the welded seam below the outer surfaces of the can. Obviously plastics are now the cheapest way to make containers, and result in a more durable object.
