Yes, this is a shallow point I know, but we are talking about the average voter, are we not. Apart from his personal unpopularity, they have another impediment as well. Next time around, Labor will be trying their hardest to win the 2025 election, while Voldemort & Co. will be fighting to win the 1965 election. 3 1

old man emu Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 Spacey, There never was any sort of republic in England. There was the Commonwealth, lead by Oliver Cromwell between the death of Charles I and the restoration of Charles II. William Pitt the Younger was Prime Minister of Great Britain up until the passing of An Act for the Union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1800 and its commencement on 1st January 1801. Then he simply had his title changed to Prime Minister of the United Kingdom . This is about the best thing I have found about him :"he helped define the role of the Prime Minister as the supervisor and co-ordinator of the various government departments". 1

willedoo Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 This paragraph starts off the Wiki page on Commonwealths: 'A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. Historically, it has been synonymous with "republic".[1] The noun "commonwealth", meaning "public welfare, general good or advantage", dates from the 15th century.[2] Originally a phrase (the common-wealth or the common wealth – echoed in the m odern synonym "public wealth"), it comes from the old meaning of "wealth", which is "well-being", and is itself a loose translation of the Latin res publica (republic).[3] The term literally meant "common well-being". In the 17th century, the definition of "commonwealth" expanded from its original sense of "public welfare" or "commonweal" to mean "a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people; a republic or democratic state".[4][5]' England would be described as a Calvinist republic during Cromwell's rule.. 2

Bruce Tuncks Posted August 22, 2022 Author Posted August 22, 2022 I reckon puritanism is the worst mind-poison that was ever invented. Apparently, when Cromwell was in power, it was dangerous to grow some herbs in your garden. If found, they would be evidence that you might be a Catholic, so you were tortured till you confessed. I blame Cromwell for the dreadful food my mother cooked. 1 1

Bruce Tuncks Posted September 7, 2022 Author Posted September 7, 2022 She learned to cook from her mother, who learned as a kitchen-hand at Phillip's Hendon Works in the 1920'3 to 1930's , This grandmother only had one paying job I think. So I grew up on whatever gran learned and passed on to her daughter. It was awful food. Gran was a Hahndorf German, but as one of the youngest of 11 kids, she obviously never learned at home. So I reckon that the canteen at the Phillips factory served up pommy food, and that is what gran learned about.. Ever gone to an English restaurant? Neither have I.... I reckon Cromwell killed them. Actually, I don't think that german food was much better in those days. Italian, french, greek, asian and middle-eastern food was all better. 1 1
Jerry_Atrick Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 English food gets a bad wrap IMHO.. A good roast on a cold winters day is hard to beat... Yes, I have been to an English restaurant: https://www.theenglishrestaurant.com/gallery.. And this one - the oldest in London at the time: https://rules.co.uk/gallery/food/, although, as it is mainly a game restaurant, the food is quite heavy. Yes, it has its fair share of ordinary fayre.. but I have had ordinary fayre in France and Italy, too. I think they make it for the Englisdh tourists! 1
Yenn Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 My parents would not eat in an English Cafe, it was beneath them. They sometimes went to restaurants and as far as I can tell the difference between a cafe and a restaurant was, price more in restaurant, quality variable, quantity less and the on;y thing better was table cloths in a restaurant. When I was in the army I used to prefer to eat at a local truck stop. Nowadays pub food seems good in the UK, far better than restaurants. 1
Jerry_Atrick Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 As with everything, it depends where.. Even in London, I would stay waway from all but the chains around Picadilly Circuis, Oxford Street, and similar tourist traps. But in the City (financial district), they won't survive long if they are no good; There is an old restaurant called Sweetings which has been there for eons; service traditional British fayre including Fish and Chips, but the quality is amazing.. Pub food is generally pretty good, because most pubs struggle to survive and need the food trade to bring in the punters. The taxes on a pint in a pub are quite high, so people get the booze from a supermarket and drink at home. 1
facthunter Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 How will the world's problems be solved if people drink at home? Nev 1
Bruce Tuncks Posted September 9, 2022 Author Posted September 9, 2022 Well, for one thing, drinking at home keeps you out of jail better. 1
facthunter Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 Depends on how much noise you make and what you say to the Cops at the door. Nev 2 1
