octave Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Yep I already have eyes on the back of the helmet, It may deter some birds but this one has anger management problems, I am told that cable ties sticking up from the helmet does not deter them but they don't get as close. 1
onetrack Posted October 19, 2022 Author Posted October 19, 2022 Here on the Left Coast, if one magpie is determined to be a public danger, by continuous and relentless attacks, particularly on children, the threat can be removed - the maggie can be shot. This is only deemed necessary if there's persistent danger and possible permanent injuries from regular attacks. I used to have one attack me regularly and constantly at the front gate of our farm in the 1950's - my eldest brother just shot it. Certainly not the kind of thing you can do today, the maggies are all protected, and there has to be decision-making at Govt Dept level, before authorisation to remove the threat is issued.
nomadpete Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Perhaps the government can subsidise animal psychologists to council these problem magpies.

facthunter Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 I wouldn't put human moral judgements on animals. They are here because they have evolved enough to do so and are protecting their young which is a very strong instinct in most species. Nev 1 2

Nev Speaking of the young, yesterday I was taking some photos of a brush tailed wallaby at my place. I was in the process of wondering whether it was male or female when this little head popped out of the pouch and settled the issue. 3
