kgwilson Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Dame Edna was more famous than Barry himself. Personally I thought Sir Les was his most hilarious character. Barry was a legend. RIP. 3
facthunter Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 I thought you had said "Hideous". Freudian slip on my part .Nev
willedoo Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 I always liked Dame Edna, Sir Les, and also the Bazza Mackenzie movies. Years ago, I had the Bazza Mackenzie comic books. I can't remember if the movie was made from the book or vise versa. Bazza's trip to France was notable. He got full (as usual) on the way over on the ferry and chundered over the top deck railing onto a rich old lady's miniature poodle on the lower deck. When he heard the commotion, Bazza looked over the rail, saw the dog in a pile of chunder and said "Strewth, I don't remember eating that", and the story just went downhill from there. 1 1
red750 Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Andrews is throwing them around like cofetti, so I woudn't be surprised. 1

Marty_d Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 "Sir Les Patterson saved the world" was hilarious. So many great quotes - "May your balls turn into bicycle wheels and backpedal up your arse!" is one of my favorites. 2

After I broke mine last August I was laying in a recovery ward full of other old farts with new hips. One old lady visitor wandered over to my bed and cheered me up immensely by saying her hubby had also broken his hip; and was dead inside six months! 1 2
Jerry_Atrick Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Sad to hear the first two accounts, but you have exceeded her expectation and are two mothns ahead! Keep up the good work and no more breaking hips! 2
Popular Post old man emu Posted April 23, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 23, 2023 Getting back to Barry and his characters. You have to remember that he went to England in 1959 and remained there throughout the sixties. That was a time when young Australians went to England and created a certain image for the British. Barry took up that image with Dame Edna and more so wit Les Patterson. These were characters of an era. The were satires of young Australians cut free from the bonds of a wowserish society. Unfortunately, these characters did not evolve as the society in Australia did, so that Dame Edna, the Anglophile, and Sir Les, the obnoxious, became anachronistic and out of touch, in a similar way that Paul Hogan and Strop remained amusing, but unreal. Barry was good at what he did, but really became typecast. That is the first step on the road to theatrical oblivion. I don't laugh at his characters now as I did in the past, but that is not to say that he should not be remembered, in the same way as Roy Rene, George Wallace, Dad & Dave, even Graham Kennedy are remembered 4 1
facthunter Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 They were All people of considerable talent at a time where strict social mores were being addressed. Don's Party is quite gross but these things were new territory at the time. My view of Barry was even a bit mixed at the time but things were not easy to navigate then. Going to England was almost a no brainer to expand from the Limits of where Australia was at and you were talented enough to go with it.. When you live in Europe for a while you realise how Australia is a place "down there" that doesn't make headlines in Europe very often. Nev 2
red750 Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Harry Belafonte (The Banana Boat Song - "Day-O") has died at the age of 96. 1 1
old man emu Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Harry Belafonte the Civil Rights Activist has died.
kgwilson Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 I remember the banana boat song from when I was a kid. The song was released in 1956. I just looked it up. It is a traditional Jamaican folk song with the verses repeated multiple times with "Day-o, day-o" and "Day, is a day, is a day, is a day, is a day, is a day-o" interspersed throughout. I've never forgotten it. A great man, musician and civil rights activist. He was a vocal critic of G W Bush and Trumps policies. Work all night on a drink of rum (Daylight come and we want go home) Stack banana 'til the morning come (Daylight come and we want go home) Come Mister tally man, tally me banana (Daylight come and we want go home) Lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch (Daylight come and we want go home) A beautiful bunch of ripe banana (Daylight come and we want go home) Hide the deadly black tarantula (Daylight come and we want go home) 2

willedoo Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 The way I understand pancreatic cancer, it is often very aggressive, and usually doesn't present symptoms until it's spread to the adjacent organs. I think it's very close to the liver and small intestine. My cousin's wife lived five weeks after diagnosis with it. You hear of a lot of people like that; they've probably had it for a fair while and not known it due to lack of symptoms. 1
