"In the 1950s, Tony Bennett watched with dismay as Black musicians like Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington were denied admission to concert hall dining rooms and hotels. The injustice he witnessed infuriated the young singer. "I'd never been politically inclined, but these things went beyond politics," Bennett wrote in "The Good Life," his 1998 autobiography. "Nate and Duke were geniuses, brilliant human beings who gave the world some of the most beautiful music it's ever heard, and yet they were treated like second-class citizens. The whole situation enraged me." Tony Bennett, enraged by racism, championed civil rights alongside MLK 3 2

facthunter Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I sat next to Freddie Hubbard from BNE to SYD. I'm a jazz fan and he was dead easy to talk to. I regret We didn't get to talk longer to this day. He died in 2008. Plenty about him on line. Nev 1 1
octave Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Here is a clip featuring Australian Jazz greats Don Burrows, Julian Lee, and James Morrison. Don Burrows was a great influence on me back in the day. Later on, as a music teacher one of my Sax students was offered the chance to attend a master class with Don through her school. She said that she was too nervous to play in front of him. I was able to convince her to give it a try. At her next lesson, she was so excited. She told me how nice he was and super encouraging. This video was from about 5 years ago. Don Burrows was a mentor for James Morrison in his earlier career and in Don's later life, James returned the favour. Don Burrows got quite bad arthritis which slowed him down a bit. By the end, he also had Alzheimer's but was still able to enjoy music. The Morrison brothers are also well-qualified pilots. 1 2
facthunter Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I think Don Burrows played at the Rocks Push in Sydney which I went to in about 82 and I saw James Morrisson at Swan Hill in the mid 90's. 1

Nev You actually had someone sitting next to you on a commercial flight, even TALK to you? Every flight I go on, the person next to me acts like I don't exist, and either goes to sleep, immerses themselves in an electronic device, or reads a book! The last time I actually had a decent talk to an adjoining seat passenger was on a Greyhound coach, on a night trip from Melbourne to Wangaratta in 1995. This bloke was a former WW2 RAAF tail gunner and he regaled me with some great stories of RAAF life in PNG during the War! One of his stories was about an unscheduled Sunday afternoon test flight in a Beaufort after maintenance, when he wasn't even supposed to be on board - and when they came back in to land, the port undercarriage collapsed (because a mechanic had forgotten to install something in the locking mechanism) - the Beaufort slewed 90° sideways when the wingtip came into contact with the Marsden matting - which event threw the pilot onto the firing button of the guns, and the Beaufort shot up all their tented quarters that were located alongside the runway! He said he got a severe bump on the head with bit of skin missing - but as soon as the aircraft stopped, he was out and running, so he wouldn't get caught and charged!! He said the amazing part was, no-one was injured, and no damage was reported, although he said a few tents gained some extra ventilation holes! 3 2

onetrack Posted August 11, 2023 Author Posted August 11, 2023 In a surprising coincidence, SWMBO has booked us a couple of tickets to go see a Tribute to Sugarman at a local art-deco theatre next Wed. She reckons we don't get out enough, and we need to indulge in more social events. I'm not sure I like Sugarmans music all that much, but I'll go along anyway. I just resist going to her ballet concerts, she goes with a female friend and I just drive them there and pick them up, and they think its great! I think it's great that I can avoid being dragged along to the ballet show! https://www.astortheatreperth.com/events/sugarman-rodriguez-story-performed-howie-morgan/ 4
red750 Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 I was a bit the same when my wife was alive. She loved going to concerts and plays. She would meet lady friends to sit with and I, too, would drive her there and pick her up. I was not that keen on going, although I would have sat through them with her, but we just couldn't afford them. If they were close to home, I would come home and watch telly. She loved morning concerts at Hamer Hall on Southbank - 12:30 till 2:00 pm. I would drive down and park at Albert Park, on part of the F1 track, from where I could watch boats on the lake and eat sandwiches, or go to the piers at Port Melbourne. 2 1
