I understand your premise.  Grandfather and father, that's 2 fathers.  Father and son, that's 2 sons.

BUT in that scenario the father is being counted as both a father and a son.

 

In my scenario, you have two unrelated blokes who are family men, so they're both fathers.  However by definition any male is also somebody's son, so they are both sons as well.  2 fathers, 2 sons.

 

In fact in your grandpa/father/son scenario you could remove the son as well, because even grandpa was someone's son.

But Marty, although your two blokes are definitely sons they are not necessarily fathers. We only have your word that they are family men.
