red750 Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 I thought I might start a topic to post a few mind testers. Here is one to start. Name four days of the week starting with "t". 1
old man emu Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 Name the day of the week beginning with "o". 1
red750 Posted August 31, 2022 Author Posted August 31, 2022 Correct, Jerry. Two fathers and two sons go fishing. How many in the boat?
pmccarthy Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 (edited) None, they fished off a jetty. Edited September 1, 2022 by pmccarthy 1

red750 Posted September 1, 2022 Author Posted September 1, 2022 rgmwa is correct - grandfather, father and son. 1
Marty_d Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 Could I just point out that if two fathers are fishing, they are also both somebody's sons. 1 1
rgmwa Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 Yes, but those somebody’s aren’t fishing, or.if they are, they aren’t in the same boat. 1
red750 Posted September 1, 2022 Author Posted September 1, 2022 Yes, but Marty, the grandfathers father was not there.
Marty_d Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 I understand your premise. Grandfather and father, that's 2 fathers. Father and son, that's 2 sons. BUT in that scenario the father is being counted as both a father and a son. In my scenario, you have two unrelated blokes who are family men, so they're both fathers. However by definition any male is also somebody's son, so they are both sons as well. 2 fathers, 2 sons. In fact in your grandpa/father/son scenario you could remove the son as well, because even grandpa was someone's son. 1
rgmwa Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 (edited) But Marty, although your two blokes are definitely sons they are not necessarily fathers. We only have your word that they are family men. Edited September 1, 2022 by rgmwa 1 2

A calque of German übermorgen; equivalent to over- + morrow. "Calque": A borrowing by word-for-word translation: 1
