red750 Posted April 5 Posted April 5 I'm sure Sydney would love to sed you some, onetrack. Warragamba Dam is overflowing and many suburban areas being flooded out, with evacuations everywhere. 1
nomadpete Posted April 5 Posted April 5 (edited) Note that BOM are warning of possible 'megadroughts'. None of our water supply infrastructure will cope with a 20 year drought. Do you think our governments are scrambling to build water supplies to ensure our survival through a 20 year drought? Queensland nearly ran out after a ten year low rainfall, and they cancelled building further dams, in spite of constant population growth. Edited April 5 by nomadpete 1
old man emu Posted April 5 Posted April 5 10 minutes ago, nomadpete said: That is a great idea. But only if there is water available for said veggie patch. I'm talking about a patch that is about the size of a kitchen table, or a single sleeping bed. That size can easily be watered from the household supply or grey water. How much do you need to grow? Just think about how much vegetable you do eat in a year. How many people get a punnet of seedlings and find that they are giving away produce. Don't forget that each member will not be growing the same as everyone else. 1
nomadpete Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I'm trying to suggest you are putting the cart before the horse. If the predictions play out, there might not be enough water to sustain the population, let alone trying to find extra to water the garden. Trying to minimise the cost of putting food on the table pales when there is not enough water to drink. As I pointed out, our reserves seem to only last through the average 10 or 12 year drought. Now we are warned to expect much worse. Then what? Water security vital.
facthunter Posted April 6 Posted April 6 We have to re use the water, at some stage of our thinking. and not just use it for washing public streets, driveways and Flushing turds down dunnies. Evaporative Air conditioners use a lot also.Nev 1
spacesailor Posted April 6 Posted April 6 (edited) Wellington NZ . 3 to 4 weeks without rain and their dams are dry , water arrived by milk tanker . . Apple & orange tree's for ' male ' Lemon tree's for ' women ' . Not sexist , males stand, while female crouch . Don't use your " dishwasher " machines. Wash them by hand , then put the water into your garden Grey water Buy a " camping shower kit " . Then Shower on the lawn . Silly but your grass will be green longer . spacesailor Edited April 6 by spacesailor A I changed my words. twice 1
facthunter Posted April 6 Posted April 6 And your neighbours will Linga Longer. Sales of Wellingtons in Wellington fall to new low. . Nev 1 1

Evaporative coolers waste water, but real aircons make distilled water. 1
pmccarthy Posted April 6 Author Posted April 6 Evaporative coolers don't waste water, they put it to a very good use. In low humidity they are much more electrically efficient than refrig types. Leaving the tap on while cleaning your teeth waters water. 1
facthunter Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Do you have practical experience with a Large evaporative air cond system? They USE a LOT of water. I wouldn't have liked to be on a town water supply, Nev
spacesailor Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Washing machines Waste more water , than dishwashers . Put a hose onto the outlet, to run it to your garden. At the moment I need the opposite ( water over the lawn to the washing machine ). Would be a ' time travel ' experience like washing cloths in the creek !. OH , My aching back . spacesailor
facthunter Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Yeah bit don't put your dishes in the Washing Machine either. Nev
spacesailor Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Use a ' bucket ' then use it for your garden . North of Sydney a suburb has no sewerage. Cleaned by electricity, then sprayed over lawn areas. Untill " power-outages " caused a Big stink . LoL Spacesailor
red750 Posted April 7 Posted April 7 And yet there's so much water going to waste. All these floods in NSW and Qld running off to where? In Vic, I haven't watered the garden for a few years, yet everything is green and overgrown. Even the pot plants get put out in the rain. Weeds grow to fence height in a couple of weeks. 1
spacesailor Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Same in Sydney. So emptied my 2000 ltr water tank. Just to tempt fate . Then that monsoonal rain stopped. Bright sunshine. Grandchildren's Windsor house didn't go under. ( this time ) . spacesailor
facthunter Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Monsoonal Rain is special and related to where the thermal Equator Is. Nev
facthunter Posted April 7 Posted April 7 If He caught a cold in the rain he'd become even more Hoarse. They have to be in a stable condition before they can Race. Want a TIP??? Don't bet on Horses. Nev 1
old man emu Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Talking about wasting water, house designers don't think that problem through. They place the hot water heater well away from the bathrooms so you waste a hell of a lot of water that has cooled in the pipe while you wait for the hot to come through. I've put my hot water heater within 2 metres of both my kitchen sink and bathroom. 2

I live in one of the wettest areas in the country with annual rainfall measured in metres. The Tasmanian West Coast and yet I have never seen a home with a water tank and some councils actually ask residents to conserve water. 6 hours ago, old man emu said: They place the hot water heater well away from the bathrooms so you waste a hell of a lot of water that has cooled in the pipe while you wait for the hot to come through. I have that problem in the house I just started renting. It takes a few minutes to get hot water in the bathroom and the water heater is in the bathroom. The pipes must run the perimeter of the house before reaching the taps. Amazing! 1
spacesailor Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Have you tried the " New heat pump " hot water ? . The one I used ( in the UK ) had the switch in the kitchen. SO When you forget , you traverse the house from bathroom through lounge to kitchen, to switch ON . then return, soaking wet to that bathroom. Great if you have company. A good conversation starter . IN the cold U K . ( good job they only shower once a week ) spacesailor 1
red750 Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Was nice and sunny this morning. Bloody raining again now, though. Forecast cold and miserable for the rest of the week 1
