old man emu Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 This video show the work of the ground personnel in preparation of a Wellington bomber for a mission. Take the opportunity to pause the video an take a good look at the plane itself. You don't often get these close up shots of bombers. 2 2
facthunter Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 The Wellington has a geodetic fuselage structure. I think Barnes Wallace of bouncing bomb fame had a hand in it.. Nev 1
willedoo Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 There's photos of them making it back to base with extreme damage. They seem to have a lot of longitudinal strength. A friend of mine had a grandfather who was shot down in a Wellington over Italy. The crew bailed out and all survived. He spent a couple of years as a POW and his records were interesting to read as repatriated POW's have a lot more paperwork in their records than do non POW's. Once freed, they had questionnaires to fill out to list conditions and treatment while in captivity. In the documents, he said the worst camp was the last one in Germany. He spent a winter there with no heating or blankets in the barracks, and no Red Cross parcels. Also no sport or exercise facilities and no books to read. He rated the camps in Poland as much better. 1
