We call that PIN money...usually always cash though...its the best type. Here I believe you can earn up to $100 a week without affecting your pension....hahahah who is going to tell the tax office if you do earn more. I am glad I am not the only one hoarding older PC's....

I played it "straight" all my working life Mark,. . .and got taxed to the bone for it. . . .but watching what these So-Called public servants, local government officials and pollies get away with blatantly, not any more.. . .if someone offers me cash I'll take it and Bollox to the bloody HMRC. If anyone "Does it right" nowadays,. . .then from what I have seen . . .they are just mugs. It appears to me and a few million others,. . .that the magic money tree is there to provide free everything for the tsunami of illegal immigrants who have paid not a jot into the system and most never will. . . . .

ANYWAY . . .enough of this whingeing crap. . . .

A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY FRIENDS ON THE RF FORUM. Let's hope that 2016 is an even BETTER YEAR ! ! ! ! ie,. . .I DON'T WISH TO HEAR ABOUT ANY MORE FRIENDS BEING KILLED IN STUPID AND EMINENTLY AVOIDABLE "ACCIDENTS" PLEASE. . . .Let's be careful up there. . . . . . . .

I know,. . .you lot were a few hours ahead of us but that's just plain planet rotationalist superiority. . . . .

Fireworks going off all around me as I type. . . . .

Bang on. . . .

Hi Phil

The later series of radios that are designed for USB programmers will usually all work fine on Win7 but stuff from only a couple of years ago that use serial port programmers is where the issue is. Windoze wants to control all port activity on the later versions from XP SP3 and its a pain. Also a lot of software the later generation computers are way too fast and wont program a lot of radios either. I keep a Toshiba 1200 dinosaur to program a couple of dinosaur radios also Philips Prm80 series and Motorola GP 300 and Spectras I keep an old 386 laptop for them as they will not program even on a low grade pentium which I use for almost everything. I am always looking out for older Dell or similar PC that have serial ports on them just to make sure I have a collection of them for backup hardware. Why does it all have to be so difficult. You would think as technology gets better it would be easier to do but not so.

The pcb design software I used was Protel 98 and it does not like running on Win7 but Win7 does have a addon you can download that allows you to create a VM within win7 that is a microsoft VM..it actually works extremely well for the PCB software although now I have converted over to Eagle and it runs fine on Win7 or on my Imac at work under fusion on Win7.

Bloody computers

Do you remember the old Vinten valve mobile rigs Mark ? dunno how old you are ! ! ! . . .I used a couple of these in my early convict days in Melbourne, when I had the brilliant idea of running a small taxi truck business. . . and the Vintens were the only game in town or so I was told. . . valve rigs with a rapid heater switch under the Mic clip, so when you grabbed the mic, the valves fired up and after only about thirty seconds, you could transmit ! ! ! ! Thhis was, of course so that in "Standby" mode, parked up somewhere having a skive, or between jobs with the engine off, the heater current didn't crucify the vehicle battery ! ! ! I used 2 Holden 186 utes then,. . .one open top and the other with a box on the back for wx cargo protection. . .

I gave up in the end, couldn't beat the larger competition, so I joined one of the bigger companies as an owner driver. They wanted me to pay for another vinten but I said bowlocks and asked another driver for a looksee at his crystals, then had my own made. The boss wanted me to stump up $500 for one of "His" rigs ! He was most unhappy when I called the base with my own and couldn't understand how I'd got his frequency ! ! it was simplex only back then. . . . Ahhh. . . memories.

Another couple of attempts to update proved futile. Windows support couldn't hold up a grandad's truss. I think I'll see how long I can make Win 7 last last and hope that something better will have come along in the meantime.

Wesistance is Futile. . . .you will be assimilitated. . .

That is precisely what I'm going to do as well cobber. . . . we've probably got until around mid 2017 perhaps, until Microsoft decide to denude our Win7 Op systems from auto updates,. . . and then we'll be orphans. . . . . although I know an internet radio DJ who is still using XP to deliver his shows, without any known problems. . . ( The ancient software he uses as a transmit list player won't work past XP. . .) the antivirus stuff / firewalling should basically still work,. . . and unless you invite nasties by visiting unsafe, dirty sites ( "Dirty" from a virus point of view and not porn. . .) then you 'should' be OK. .

The basic question you need to ask youself is, does the machine do what you want it to do - and will it run the software that you want it to run for your requirements and purposes ?. . . I had to format this HP laptop recently, after visiting a recommended 'Safe' by eBay, site for camera accessories. . .the site was riddled with nasties, which I kindly invited on board. . . . and when you get to my age,. . .restoring all the sodding drivers and software and bloody passwords. . . aarrrggghh. . . .Oh me of little patience. . .

Everything else is just marketing scaremongering and general bullcrap. . . .and online upgrading isn't a brilliant idea either imho,. . .I mean, if you cooked up a lovely Thai green curry, or full on sunday roast with all the trimmings. . . would you place it on the same plate, on top of the uneaten meal from the week before, and honestly expect this not to affect the fresh meal ? ? ? Of course not. . . ( not a brilliant analogy I know,. . .but the best I could think of in my New Year Sloe Gin sozzled brain. . .)

Format / load fresh OS and drivers from scratch. Far fewer mis-match error correcting patches, band aids and sodding fixes required then. . . .

Far more sensible,. . .if you don't know how to do it, . .ask a friend who does. . . ( not all pilots can fix aircraft either,. . .just drive them. . . ) conversely; buy a machine with a spec which serves the purposes you need, preloaded with the new OS by the retailer / distributor. then you will have some bugger to whinge at and sort it out for free when it goes wrong. . . . .! ( AS IT NO DOUBT WILL . . . . looking at it on the realistic side ) Here endeth the opinion. . . . .spacer.png

Memories Phill ? I was at the time the 13th employee of Vinten Communications in Richmond . Started out in assembly and alignment,

Was with them for 13 years progressed through R&D to eventually produce the first solid state transceivers at the time, finished my stint as 2IC in production after head hunted after Plessey Pacific took over and things went bollocks. We'd developed to being 100 strong at that stage a the old tech valve models were the ants pants...........Ahh the memories! spacer.png

If you have a job that needs doing and a device that will do that job adequatelywhy upgrade?

Preciseamundo Sir. . . . . ( Try telling that to Microsoft. . . . . . ) Defffearz comes to mind. . . .some friends of mine ( not as cynical and savvy as wot we is. . . .) are quite worried about the pop up messages they're getting on their computers, with more and more hysterical warnings . . . . my next door neighbour is a retired headmistress from a high school and not silly at all,. . .and she came around to ask what this was all about, thinking her machine was going to explode if she didn't "follow the leader" to a Windoze ten downgrade immediately. . . .

Brainwashing of the populace mate. . . . . if you tell people the same bollox every day. . .in the end, even sensible people will begin to have doubts. . . . I mean,. . think of the mainstream media . . .? . . . people tune into this pig crap all day every day and deicide that it must be true. . .the BBC don't tell lies do they. . .( ! ) and they then start to believe it. . ( Goebbles was good at this up to, and during the second world war ) .so MS are just following the same principle.

I fixed a lovely old bloke's computer a few months ago,. . .and could not believe he was still using windows 98. . . . . He does NOT own a TV, as he can't afford the £145.50 per annum licence tax. . . .and it isn't connected to the interweb either. . . . I reformatted it and reinstalled Win98 off a scratched to hell old CD, and he's as happy as a pig in $h1t. . . .he only uses the thing for making and printing A3 church posters. . . . .

Too Much Bullcrap in the world today aer kid. . . . . The planet seems to run on it as a primary fuelling agent. . . . .in fact I am so sick of leftie propaganda that I can't fly in an aircraft that carries any fuel at all in the left wing tank. . . . . .spacer.png

Yes mate,. . . I went to Richmond to get my four crystals made, but they gave me the address of some place that specialised in sorting crystals, as I needed them in a hurry. . .they were very helpful ( this was early 1973 by the way, ) and said they normally didn't deal directly with end users as some big firms don;t but they were kind and helped me a lot. . .it may have been something to do with the fact that I gave them the crystal specs in radiotalk,. . .being an elctro -radio nerd . . .I needed four as the company I was going to work for ( SS Taxi Trucks in Springvale, Melb,. . ) had a two channel setup, ie one radio mast at the base HQ, and another one higher up, near Kew Junction,. . .which was channel 2, serving the City, North, and the Western suburbs . . .as I mentioned the system was really basic simplex, on the 70 mHZ band and AM ( of course ).

The 70 Meg band was a bit of a problem for Australian users during the Vietnam war, so I was told by various taxi drivers and other operators on 70 megs ( the four metre band ) One veteran taxi chappie, working for Regal Taxis in Camberwell; said that during that war, he would regularly get interference from American forces using the same frequencies. . eg,. . . ."Car to cover Mabel, at the Camberwell rank. . . going home to Toorak mate" ,. . followed immediately by a strange voice saying . . ." And we need some napalm Two klicks South of hill 237. . .we're being overrun. . . ! ! " Tropospheric "Ducting" sometimes does this if conditions are right on that band. . .! I use four metres ( FM ) nowadays, but, regrettably, no exciting Vietnam interference. . .)

Then some clown put the "Transresistor" into production radio mobile sets,. . . and the rest is history. . . . . I wonder if there's a museum of old 2-way radios somewhere. . . ? ?

Because the cunning little sh!ts supersede drivers or when you buy new peripherals the drivers will not work on the old [in nerd years, sometimes three years old] computer systems, such as a new screen, or a printer.

This is completely true Turbo. . . . . .

But with a small amount of judicial hacking, these problems can be sorted. If any operator has anything about them, . . .then they can log in to many fixit sites / forums and download, or modify driver routines to perform the task required,. . .it's like anything else, . . .the answers ARE available if you are prepared to go and look. . . .the" little sh1ts" ( and I fully agree with this nomenclature ) rely upon those who can't . . .or Won't bother go and look. . . . ie, 80 percent of the computer buying proles. . . . they are the "Victims" relied upon by the industry,. . .as in many other industries. . . . but the computerology industry is supercynical, and relies to a very large extent upon people being dumb and pliable. . . . . . The watchword is therefore,. . .don't fall for the BS. . . . . .ASK around. . .

Hi Phil

Vinten were a bit before my time I am afraid. I am surprised that you guys still have to pay a TV licence...we used to here but I think it was dropped about 40 years ago. Bloody Plessey MTR42 etc bring me nightmares and Willis radios as well. Willis could make good VHF radios but his UHF were useless and unstable. Worked on FM331 and the old Westons and Philips valve PA radios and a few old Pye Overlanders as well back in the late 70's when I first started tinkering with radios. Worked on lots of Valve Ham radios and big amplifiers but generally all transistor style. Obviously right up to the latest generation smd stuff and some SDR radios. SDR is the future now and they work incredibly well and as the front end D to A chips are just unbelievable now. I am glad I am out of the commercial side of the business now I am getting too old to deal with it all. I love the technology but dont have a lot of desire to get fully into as much.

I am happy to repair radios for pin money now and make my own gear. Currently working on modifing Mitec 10 ghz 2 mb link gear for my 10 ghz TX/RX for some moonbounce also for a local 10 ghz beacon. Have a 1 KW UHF fet amp and a 1.5 KW VHF amp single device fet being built now. Both amps are in 1 12U rack unit I made and use a common 50V 65amp powersupply.

I have to get back to the airband simplex repeater..I just paid the licence again. Been having a real lot of issues getting the voice recorders working properly from the AM signal..triggering from the mute on all the AM radios is very difficult for some reason. It shouldnt be but it is so this year its one of my major projects I have to get going. I look like now making my own voice recorder and will write some software using a arduino to control it maybe the only way to get it done properly

My main programming PC for radiso is Win98 and it still works perfect every time the only issue now is the hardware is dying so have to transfer the HD's across to some more hardware which is a pain but has to be done.

Have not tried win 10 on any programming at all but I think its time I upgraded my programming PC to Win XP Pro SP2 though

A lot of what you wrote is a bit beyond my knowledge Mark,. . . I did a bit of moonbounce at the Brisbane A.R.C. on 2 metres around 1974 ! ! ! ! You'd never have believed the size of the stacked and bayed antenna array for that,. . when we successfully worked an American station, I think it may have been W6 SUN,. . but memory isn't that good,. . .the signals were really crap due to libration fading ( Moon wobbling on it's axis ) and very difficult to read what the guy was saying, and his setup was doing a better job than ours,. . .we had to take it all to bits after the event, as it wouldn't have stood a 10km/hr wind ! the guy came over to see us around six months afterwards, really nice bloke and I heard myself on his tape. . .bloody 'eck. . .it's a wonder he could understand it with my semi Pom semi Oz accent. . . ! ! Before we took the antenna to bits, we accidentally worked a nice lady named Erin Malone, YJ8 NEM, out on what was then the New Hebrides,. .(now Vanuatu ) when we reduced the elevation down to around 10 degrees up. . . Heck of a long way for 2FM at the time though. . . .obviously assisted by low level tropospheric ducting or summat . . .! !

I have very little experience in programming radios from computers, I used to programme PMR ( commercial) radios when I worked at Raycom Communications in Birmingham after I'd re-emigrated back to the UK in the early 1980s. . .but I've forgotten most of that. . .but am learning now as I'm assisting my mate Pete with programming his Baofengs for short term hire apps in the UK. . he works alone and is inundated with work at the moment. . . . was there for three days over the Xmas holidays. . . .putting together radios and portable repeater packs etc. . .

He uses Win7 for that work. . .and is utterly, fantastically Brilliant about everything computerylogical ! ! ! Poor bloke lost his right arm due to bone cancer,. . but it doesn't seem to worry him much. . .had to flog his motorbikes though . .! Just as an aside to this story,. . .I asked him if he was recieving any disability benefits and he said he'd never asked. . . .!

I sent him down to DWP and now he gets £124 per week amputee benefit whether he works or not, but they only backdated it to last June,. . .he lost his arm ten years ago. . . .! ! ! Welcome to caring Britain Eh ?. . . . . tee hee. . . .

Dick Smith used to work for Westons, he was an ace sales person there. He left to form Dick Smith Electronics (a business now on its last legs and not likely to survive). He sold out in the early 1980s.

Mark,

Have you ever used Pararells on your mac?

Just wondering if I run windows 7 via pararells and full screen it can I still burn dvd's and also cooy flash drives?

I notice when i plig my windows stick in the mac it adds a couple of random files and was wondering if it would still do it when using windows 7 in pararells.

The Pentagon are upgrading all their devices to windows 10. Four million pc's to upgrade in 12 months, what could possibly go wrong?!

Link to DoD memo

Personally I'm happy with windows 10, haven't had any dramas and I couldn't go back
