red750 Posted February 9 Posted February 9 A question for you. A guy at the Men's Shed said they are going to stop reregistering cars without airbags soon, although I can't find anything online about it. Has anyone heard this? My 1997 Festiva doesn't have airbags, neither does my daughters. 1
onetrack Posted February 9 Posted February 9 It will never happen. The cars without airbags were legal when they were sold, and they're legal until they're scrapped. However, if you want to sell a car without an airbag, you may have more difficulty getting rid of it. My old Italian neighbour Barney lost his licence, because he's 92, and they deemed him unfit to drive. So I sold his '96 Mazda Protege for him. He bought it new when he retired, and it was in perfect condition with 134,000 kms, and the interior was immaculate. It was always shedded, and lovingly looked after. But when he bought it, the Mazda had no airbag, but Mazda gave buyers the option of an airbag for an extra $800 cost. Barney didn't get the airbag option. So when I sold it, I had a woman who was dead keen on it for her young daughter, and who nearly bought it - until she found out the car wasn't fitted with an airbag. She canned the deal, saying she wanted maximum crash protection for her beloved daughter. Fair enough, it was her decision, but I declined to tell her, her daughter was more likely to be in a crash with a show-off boyfriend, and probably stand a higher chance of injury or death in that case. Regardless, it didn't take long before I sold the car to a keen little Asian bloke who wanted wheels for his younger brother. They didn't even ask about airbags.
spacesailor Posted February 9 Posted February 9 If they did that for having no " flashing indicators " . The Old ( prefifty ) English cars would be the same as those modern BMW CARS . spacesailor

I think that this Karen should have been more concerned about the integrity of the seatbelt fabric. The car was close on 30 years old, and despite being garaged, the mere use of the seatbelt would have had an effect on the fabric, especially for a one-owner vehicle where the section of the belt at the pillar bracket would have been the same over the years. And then there is the UV light effect on the fabric. It might have spent a lot of time under cover, but it was also out in the sunlight over that 30 years. We never consider the integrity of our seatbelts. I've seen many a seatbelt with frayed edges and with the colour faded by the sunlight. I think that some aircraft have a recurring AD for the replacement of harnesses every 10 years or so. 2
willedoo Posted February 10 Posted February 10 The AMH Band has an interesting percussion style. A bit of Pastafarian influence maybe. 1
nomadpete Posted February 13 Posted February 13 (edited) This is probably random, so I put it here. This morning I heard a jet aircraft heading south. This is very uncommon as the next destination to the south is Antarctica. Flight Radar 24 showed it to be an AMSA search aircraft despatched from Melbourme and it circled a spot about 50k or so south of the southernmost point of Tasmania, then headed back. I hope the people involved are ok. I note that the present wind there is 1kt. So it's not a storm issue. Edited February 13 by nomadpete Added Windy Forecast 1
Marty_d Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Yes, hope they're ok. There's been a couple of jets heading south in the past month or 2, one was heading to Chile and the other Johannesburg. 1
nomadpete Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Well, nothing in the news. I don't think AMSA do flights like that just for fun. The track was to a specific location mid ocean, descended, did a number of oval orbits, then went back to Melbourne. Later a different aircraft flew over, tracking due north at under 10,000' but it didn't show up on Flight Radar 24. No transponder? 1
onetrack Posted February 13 Posted February 13 It might have been someones lost and activated EPIRB? I wonder how many false alarms they get? I can remember one here a couple of years ago, some scumbag came in on a radio call, claiming to be in distress at sea of the W.A. coast. They sent the AMSA Challenger from the East Coast, and it spent some time searching, before the call was declared a hoax.
nomadpete Posted February 14 Posted February 14 Hoax radio calls are too common. But not likely in this case. I'm guessing it might have been an inadvertant activation of EPIRB. The location would have been on the fringe of VHF radio reception fom Matsukyer Lighthouse, so maybe not able to confirm the situation. 1
red750 Posted February 17 Posted February 17 They have just installed one of those bottle recycling stations at Forest Hill Chase shopping centre. I went down ther today. There was a queue of people waiting to use it, some with shopping trolleys or large wheelie bin liner bags full of bottles and cans. I've been told you can go there and find a "FULL" sign. You have to put the bottles or cans in the reader one at a time while the machine verifies the barcode. Takes forever. There are more bottles not accepted than ones that are. When it's all done, you need an app to get a digital payment, or a printed receipt you can redeem at Coles, or have your refund donated to a charity. When I take my 20 bottles up, I want a $2 coin. There is an over-the-counter centre a few km further up the road which gives cash refunds. I'll be going there in future. 1
old man emu Posted February 17 Posted February 17 You've gotta feel sorry for them. By them I mean the people who write the code that makes the features of your microwave work. How many of us just use the microwave to defrost frozen food to be cooked elsewhere, or to heat or melt butter for cooking? But I was looking at the stickers on mine and it seems that there are programs to do all sorts of wonderful food preparation things. Things that I have never bothered with. I'm sorry for wasting your efforts, coding person. 2

onetrack Posted February 17 Posted February 17 We've got a recycling centre only about 500 metres away in an old factory unit, in a nearby small industrial area. It's run by Asians, and I've never seen keenness like it! You drive straight in, they tell you to not even get out of your car, they'll take all your bottles and cans in whatever containers you've got, straight out of your vehicle, without you even lifting a finger. The Asians empty every container and sort the stuff into big skips at amazing speed. You just keep driving forward and when you get to the payment area, the collector adds up what you dropped off, comes over to you, reads out the tally, asks if the tally is correct (it always is!), and asks how you want to be paid. You can collect payment in cash, have it paid to your bank account, or nominate a charity to give the money to. All this takes about 3-4 minutes on average. Sometimes there's a small queue, but they churn through the queue at speed, and you never have to wait long. https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=f0d8b6dbc2182cd0&sxsrf=ACQVn08RzZyV5sUZYVv7rOsJ1bhRQQYUdA:1708164771364&q=Containers+For+Change+-+U+Can+Recycle+Dianella The State Govt is installing more automated centres, but I think they're a backward step - and much slower. 1 2
spacesailor Posted February 17 Posted February 17 We ' had ' one once , in the IGA shop , but the mess left behind . was atrocious. Reject bottles & cans, cardboard boxes & plastic bags ( used to carry said containers) everywhere. It was so bad the rubbish got under their customers cars . So it was removed " never to be seen again " . spacesailor 1
