Octave is not on line. This is what I found.

Premier Roger Cook slams singer Peter Garrett for sowing ‘seeds of hatred’ with Gina Rinehart rant

Roger Cook has lashed rock musician Peter Garrett for sowing “seeds of hatred” with a “completely inappropriate” taunt aimed at WA mining magnate Gina Rinehart during his Perth concert.

The Premier labelled the singer, activist and former Federal politician “disrespectful” for urging his audience to “pretend they’re dancing on Gina Rinehart’s grave” during the Perth Festival show at East Perth Power Station on Friday night.

As well as sledging Australia’s richest person, the 71-year-old Midnight Oil frontman who was performing with his other band, The Alter Egos, also criticised gas giant Woodside and US President Donald Trump between songs.

Perth Festival has defended Garrett’s right to personal artistic expression.

But Mr Cook said even though the arts were meant to “challenge” audiences, Garrett had gone too far.

“He should know that sort of language is completely inappropriate,” he said.

The State Government contributed $9.5 million to this year’s Perth Festival — through Lotterywest — but Mr Cook would not say whether that funding would be reviewed.

“We obviously want them to be careful that they comply with the standard of continuing to make WA a rich and desirable place to live,” Mr Cook said.

“Talking about people’s graves, talking about well known Western Australians in that way is not part of it.”

Asked for his advice to Perth Festival organisers, Mr Cook called for “a bit of kindness” to be put back into the system.

“The arts has an important opportunity and an obligation to do that,” he said.

“The arts are also there to challenge us and perhaps Peter Garrett thought that he was challenging the people of WA when he made his inappropriate comments.

“He wasn’t, quite frankly, he was being disrespectful and sowing the sort of seeds of hatred that we do see around the place, so he’s got to stop.”

Liberal leader Libby Mettam also condemned the remarks as “utterly appalling”, especially coming from someone “with such a public profile”.

“Such offensive comments have no place in our society,” she said. “It would not matter which individual these comments are directed to, but a clear message certainly does need to be sent in relation to those comments.”

Perth Festival has said it does not support censorship, and is committed to providing a platform for “diverse voices”.

“Perth Festival recognises that people will have many different perspectives, experiences and opinions that reflect the complexity and rich diversity of our community,” a spokesperson said.

“Artistic expression is personal and views shared by artists are their own.”

Major festival sponsors who responded to queries from The West Australian on Sunday did not take issue with Garrett’s comments.

Lewis Paton-Ryan, general manager for long-term festival partner Audio Technik, said it fully supported its commitment to “artistic integrity and freedom of expression”.

“To platform diverse voices is central to the mandate of the festival — the promotion of ‘a rich and diverse cultural and artistic life as a central characteristic of Western Australia’,” a spokesperson said. “And that cannot be achieved without an acceptance of diverse viewpoints, regardless of how they may challenge us.”

A spokesperson for Lotterywest said the curation and management of the festival’s program and artists was Perth Festival’s responsibility.

Ha ha! I love Garretts cheek! He probably said it tongue-in-cheek, to a bunch of youngsters who don't have much time for Rinehart anyway, and can't relate to her. She's a Trump arse-licker, what more do you want to know about her personal qualities??

The Hancocks are the Robber Barons of W.A., and Gina thinks that every West Australian should kiss their arses, because WE OWE them, just like Zelinskyy OWES Trump and the U.S.!!

She can kiss my arse first, because she's a money-and-power-chasing grub, just like her money-grubbing God, Trump.

I can feel some graffiti-spraying coming on, when I next come across a Hancock plaque telling me how great their family is, and how much all West Australians should be thankful for all their mining work! This is the same bunch of grubs who owned the Wittenoom Asbestos mines, and who have always refused to accept any responsibility for multiple thousands of Asbestosis and Mesothelioma deaths, from mining asbestos at Wittenoom.

The Hancocks claim all the responsibility for the asbestos deaths lies on CSR, who bought the mines off the Hancocks. Gina is a massive tax evader, she married the biggest tax-evading crooked lawyer in America (Frank Rinehart) and he taught her well.

She controls the massive Hancock Trust, which is simply a tax-evasion tool of monstrous proportions, and which setup shows how far our taxation system is behind sly money-grubbers.

@octave, as Johnny on the spot, maybe you can fill us in on the strife Peter Garrett got himself into in Perth.

I am unsure why my input is more interesting than anyone else's.

Seems like a storm in a teacup.  It would not be my style.  I would say, though, that people will often complain or cancel a comedian for joking about a person or group of people, and right will rant about free speech and talk about "cancel culture"

`I just thought you may have more details than we had here on the east coast, knowing how members here are always complaining about her, her Trump affiliations, and the sign she was holding saying Dig, Baby Dig,

I think Peter has become confused between myself and Octave. I live in Perth, and Peter Garretts comments were made at a concert at the old, unused East Perth Powerhouse building, which is currently being used by the arts people involved in running the Festival of Perth.

The Festival of Perth gathers up a lot of artistic people who are comedians, singers, and show people, who are quite often "left of centre" in their outlook and performances.

We went along to the EPP just a couple of days ago to see some of the shows and the performances setup, it was all free, thanks to LotteryWest.

I personally think there was no major malice intended in Garretts statement, it was "off the cuff", the same as many entertainers make outrageous statements and indulge in risque behaviour at "entertainment" events.

IMO, Gina Rinehart is largely unpopular thanks to her entire familys mantra of continuous personal greed, waste on a massive scale, denigration of anyone they consider poor or "low socio-economic" status, and support of the extreme right wing, and endless mining with no restrictions - especially against her plans.

Lang Hancock built a $20M mansion in Perth for himself and his Filipino second wife, and when he died, the Filipino wife, Rose, tried to get a share of the Hancock wealth. Gina spent multiple tens of millions on lawyers and lawsuits to ensure that Rose Hancock only got a miniscule percentage of the Hancocks massive wealth. Then Gina demolished the mansion, which was in excellent condition. She's a nasty piece of work.

Lang Hancock once suggested that waterholes should be poisoned in remote station areas to get rid of all the Aborigines, so I don't think Garrett has any more claim to producing social and personal hatred, than the Hancocks do.

And Trump, who Gina Rinehart adores and worships to a sickening level, is the most divisive leader the world has ever seen. He spouts venal hatred and division daily, especially against political opponents.

A popular family car will no longer be available in Australia after its parent company's profit dropped sharply and it looks to rein in costs.

Aussies will no longer have access to the Jeep Grand Cherokee when existing stock runs out.

In 2024, Jeep parent company Stellantis recorded a 70 per cent drop in its net profit to $AU9.14billion.

Stellantis' car brands include Jeep, Ram and Chrysler in the US, France's Citroen and Peugeot and Italy's Fiat, Abarth, Alfa Romeo and Maserati, along with China's electric Leapmotor.

The Grand Cherokee SUV was once a popular car in Australia, but only 645 were sold here in 2024; just over half the 1,247 in 2023.

It's been a quick decline for a car that was named Australia's best-selling large SUV in 2014.
