I just saw that the 2024 Dakar Rally has just been won by Carlos Sainz & he is 61 now. The interesting thing is that it was in an Audi with an electric drive train powered by a generator driven by an internal combustion engine but it saves 60% of emissions compared to a standard ICE drive train so more or less a hybrid. Of course this is not a new concept, diesel electrics have been around for 120 years but now modern technologies have enabled this in rally cars.

It is the torque available from zero rpm and getting that on to the ground that blows ICE powered vehicles away.

" Torque to ground "

Was the realm of the OLD Steam traction engine .

There was a competition in NZ,

First to the fence & return .

All the most powerful I C cars were left at the fence by a OLD steam car . ( Stanley Steamer I think ) .

To me the term Woke is used as a insult to anybody that is culturally aware.social aware or environmentally aware.

So it should be a compliment but instead is used by the right wing nutters to insult anything they don't understand or don't like.

Protest against police unlawfully killing a black citizen, you are woke.

Want fair wealth taxes, you are woke.

It's all just a catch all term to insult progressive thinkers.

The media just lets them spew anti-woke bullshit and they get a free pass.

It was announced today that an Australian mining company is going to mothball its nickel and cadmium activities because the global demand for these minerals has slumped due to oversupply. Perhaps the initial spike in global demand for EVs has reached a peak and now will fall to a lower, replacement level before a more gradual rise once the ancillary infrastructure has been created.

Yes demand has dropped mainly because of reduced demand compared to expectations and stockpiling.

Note the grubby buggers are asking for big government bailouts to protect their investments.

Once again the miners put bugger all into the economy, won't pay taxes and expect the government to hand over millions to support their poor decisions.

Yet again the public pay for corporate losses and windfall profits.

My neighbours Tesls 3 . Had a puncture,

A person arrived,  changed his tyre.

And , put a spare on, ( from his car ) he had brought along .

Later,  he had to tale his EV to a garage to get ' his ' tyre replaced on his car.

NO SPARE. AT ALL .

That is not unique to Tesla or other EVs. Many new IC cars do not come with a spare. Other cars like my 2007 Ford Focus only have a so-called space saver tyre which is only a temporary solution and is limited to 80 KpH.

Here is a list (a bit old 2017) of cars that do not come with a spare tyre.

"Researchers for the roadside-services provider examined model-year 2017 vehicles and found that 28 percent of the new cars do not come with a spare tire as standard equipment. Eliminating the spare tire reduces the weight of the vehicle and improves fuel economy. While those vehicles often come with kits that can temporarily fix small punctures, if you have sidewall damage like I did, a large puncture or a blowout, you’re up a certain creek without a paddle.

AAA also offered up a list of new vehicles for 2017 that don’t offer a spare at all. Here they are in alphabetical order:"

And those space-savers tyres are absolutely deadly when it comes to causing a massive deterioration in vehicle handling when fitted.

You're obliged under roadworthiness laws to have EXACTLY the same size, profile, and width of tyre at each corner of your car - otherwise you can be booked - but manufacturers can supply something akin to a bicycle wheel for a spare, and then tell you it's safe to drive on??

Those space-savers are designed only for short distance use, just to get you to a tyre seller. They also come with a warning not to drive above 90 kph. In Australia, a "short distance"  can be the equivalent to the length of a piece of string in rural areas.

Don't forget that the use of those tyres would have been studied and approved of by the manufacturer's engineers who would have one and a half eyes on the liability consequences of the use of the tyres.

A speed limit and a mileage limit apply. I think it's mainly the room they take up. Motorbikes don't carry spare but some scooters might.. Half the drivers wouldn't be able to change a tire these days. (or want to). Nev

Here's an example of why I dislike Woke people....    They want us to NOT climb up rocky hills . I see why a calorie-deprived folk should have such a taboo, but it's totally unfair to ask silly whitefellows to do this too. Yes, the Grampians and now parts of mt Arapiles  are included in their silly taboo ideas.

Bruce, you've mentioned your opposition to this walking ban before.

Can I asked how many times you climbed Uluru or the Grampians in the last 10 years?

Well I woke up this morning at about 6:00 so am still woke. I won't be woke after about 11:00pm tonight for 7 or 8 hours & then I'll be woke again. I don't like being woke in the middle of the night.

You might have a wake after you're gone IF you have enough friends Since I have NO IDEA what it actually means and care even less no further comment from me will be forthcoming. Nev

My old 2012 Mitsubishi had a space saver tyre. It got used twice in 11 years. Got me home & to the tyre shop at 80 kph. My new MG4 hasn't got a spare wheel but has a tyre pump & a can of goo. That'll work for a nail but not for a major slash etc. However the car comes with free roadside assist for the first 7 years. There is a button in the roof console behind the rear view mirror & pressing that sends a help message with the GPS location of the car to the roadside assist mob who in Australia is NRMA.

NRMA have my details in their database & ring my mobile number to ask what's wrong & advise when they will be out to fix my problem. Hopefully I'll never need to use it.

EV-owning is looking better now as the energy giant Origin is offering off-peak recharges for $5. The bad news is, it's only for 200 participants, and it's just a 12 month trial. I trust it works out for Origin and the scheme is taken up all around Australia. It makes sense to encourage EV charging when demand is low.
