It's not even a $5.00 raise, it's actually only $4.60 a fortnight for a single pensioner and just $3.50 a fortnight each for couples.

There's a lot of anger over the miserly increase, directed at the Govt by the pensioners out there, as evidenced by the comments on many "seniors" sites.

The Govt claims that inflation is under control and back to 2.4% - that doesn't jell with all the current increases in pricing, in nearly everything I want to buy.

The latest floods will make it worse. Albo was there. It's his fault? Dutton and TATE(Gold Coast Lord Mayor) were away in Sydney Fund  raising for the LNP.  Nev

Woolworths and co need to pull their heads in. Every time I walk in there things are up by $1, last week Nudie OJ was on special at $8.50, it’s normal price before. I only bought it when it was $6.50 on sale.

i like real ok with bacon and eggs on the weekend as I don’t get a crook guts after if I have the OJ, I assume the acid in citrus combats the fattyness of the bacon.

every other item is the same. They are real crooks with their here to help adds. Only their bottom line is getting help. They know we have to eat, other stuff is just ancillary.

Definitely NO to a blanket import duty, but maybe selective import duties.  "Tariff" is another word for "Import Tax". Such taxes are recouped by the imported by adding them to the price charged to the purchaser. And don't forget that the price the purchaser pays will include 10% GST.

The imposition of tariffs is a means of encouraging a local economy to develop by making locally produced goods and services compete on price with imported goods. Unfortunately, for a long time Australia has let its agricultural and manufacturing move off shore. In the case of foodstuffs, next time you are in the supermarket, look for the country of origin of the the foodstuffs you want to buy. 'Buy Australian" is more like "By Australian".

Australia imports from United States amounted to US$34.72 Billion during 2024. Here is a link to a table which shows what Australia imported from the USA and the value of each class of import.

https://tradingeconomics.com/australia/imports/united-states

From that list, it is clear that there are some goods that could have an import duty applied to them, and some it would be wise to give free entry. Perhaps we could whack tariffs on alcohol and confectionery. But that might hike the price of "Rum & Raison" beyond the reach of some people.

Let's be smart(er) and not copy what Trump does. He's a bully and will shoot himself in the foot. Any progress will be achieved quietly behind the scenes.  Not in Blaring Headlines in the Newspapers.  Nev
