I'm looking at a trip to Melbourne to pick up a truck in early May. It's at Pyalong. I'd be flying into Tullamarine on a Redeye, arriving in the morning. What are my options as regards travelling to Pyalong from Tullamarine?

It's in Victoria and still a fair way from the  Murray River. I'm a bit concerned as to how He'll handle seeing water on the road and having to use windscreen wipers. It won't take long to get on the Western Highway at Bacchus Marsh, East of Ballarat, which you bypass as well.. .  Nev

OME - It's only a little truck, a 3.5 tonner. Truck log books don't apply to anything under 12 tonnes gross as I understand. It has a GVW of 8000kgs.

Nev, I'm pretty scared at the thought of seeing water falling from the sky again, it's going to be a real experience.

Well, I'm all set. Just got a Virgin deal for Mon 6th May, a one-way fare for 26,700 Velocity points. The seat was $209 otherwise. I leave 6:00AM here and into Tulla at 11:35AM, God willing and trusting the creaky old Virgin B737 holds together.

Gee, NSW is pretty vicious on the truck size requirements, aren't they? I still wouldn't have to stop with my 8000kg GVM. I don't think Victoria and S.A. go as low as an 8000kg requirement, do they? - I was under the impression 12000kg was the start of the "heavy truck" rating, nationwide.

I'm not impressed with the transport services in Victoria. It looks like I have to travel back into the city centre from Tullamarine, and then catch a bus to Pyalong.

But I've booked a flight that arrives at 11:35AM on Mon 6th May, and the first bus leaves for Pyalong from Southern Cross at 18.30! So that's not much use to me.

I'll have to examine other options. I wonder if an Airtasker would drive me out there for a reasonable figure?

It's not far from the Airport to "TOWN". It's cheap and  has a two story bus for that leg, so take some little book to read or Marvel at the World around you. You go past Essendon Airport?  so view what can happen to an Airport if you let the developers in and wonder at the skills of Pilots in the past who flew B 727's into there though I did see one that didn't touch down till past the intersection of the runway  while landing towards the east. It was the Other mob of course. I  am amazed they were able to stop it in the distance remaining. Nev

I believe NSW has a much lower weight limit , to catch ' caravan's & large ' tent-top-trailers out. Revenueing $ their coffers.

Possibly 4.5 ton .

Remember the fiasco with the ' Ford one ton truck'  - Winnebago conversion that was overweight when two people got in . It was made to the empty weight of that truck . Not just the " overweight " . BUT the drivers with their car licence copped another fine for a driving infringement . ( needed a truck licence ) .

Nev - But the problem is, I don't want, or need, to go into central Melbourne. It's going the wrong way for me. I just want to head straight North from the airport.

Noone does but there's NO  great exodus to Pyalong at any given time from the Airport so the BUS goes to a more central point to pick up more  people who get there by bus or train from suburbs and there's toilets and food and shelter. How many people from the plane you arrive in are likely to go to Pyalong? It's NOT a resort or the size  of any suburb. Nev

Large country, small population... has its disadvantages.

Nev's pretty well on the money.. though it looks like there may be a better bus option for you than waiting around until 20 past 6 at Southern Cross: https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Melbourne-Airport-MEL/Pyalong#trips

Arrive at 11:35; on the Bus at Tulla at 12:06 (so hope your flight isn't too late and you're off quick smart). A few hours in Melb and arrive at Pyalong at 18:20... Assuming the site is accurate.

Most of the Population in AUSTRALIA is in about 5 cities. . Melbourne uses a ring road to get to a lot of places. While Pyalong is north of Tulla the road going there is a fair way to the east of the direct line. There's some quite scenic ways to go to Pyalong but they are back roads chock full of Kangaroos.   and you are likely to get someone coming from the other direction out of shape practising for the world Rally Championships..   when you get there Heathcote is just a bit further  down the road . There's a few places you could get a decent meal   Nev
