We had the same user pays system in Queensland many years ago. These days the ambulance service is free for everybody. Sort of, that is. It's funded by ratepayers who pay a levy attached to their rate bill. So in reality, rate payers contribute toward the funding but for non rate payers the ambulance service costs them nothing.

The Victorian Ambulance has a membership scheme, where you pay $25.97 per quarter for family or $12.99 per quarter for singles.This entitles you to the following.

 

In Victoria you get:

• Emergency road transport by us.
• Emergency air transport by us.
• Treatment by our paramedics.
• Clinically Necessary Non-Emergency transport by us or our partners.

If you are travelling in other states you get:

• Emergency road transport by their states service.
• Emergency air transport by their states service.
• Treatment by paramedics when you don't need moving.
• Clinically Necessary Non-Emergency transport to the nearest medical facility. AV must approve this service prior to booking.

As a pensioner, ambulance transport is free.

My take was that they needed some way of culling out people at emergency services and chose the ambulance method of doing this.

It would have cost $3000 to get to horsham from edenhope by ambulance at full tote odds.

Of course, since ambulance ramping was invented, even this no longer works....  I like Space's idea of lying on the floor.

If they take you by Plane or helicopter it will cost heaps. Some private insurers cover ambulance. Think yourselves lucky you aren't in the USA. Nev

Years ago, I well knew an ambulance dispatcher in Darwin.  The bane of his life was indigenous who

would use the ambulances as taxis...  for example, they would all get out of the ambulance when it was nowhere near the destination but close to a grog shop.

Maybe a bit of payment would lessen this?
