fly_tornado
back in the 80s they used to call this "going postal" because all these mass workplace shootings kept on happening in the USPS. But I respect your right to call this "muslim terrorism" because the media want to report the facts in the story as part of a narrative about Muslim terrorism. Bruce
I reckon the RSL had many facets depending on which branch. My father in law was senior in a branch later in life, and he used to say the following needed to be lined up and shot: Men with beards, men who ate "dago food" ie spaghetti, men with tattoos, and drivers who annoyed him on the road. He didn't actually shoot anybody in real life.
Phil Perry
Meanwhile at Casa Merkel.. Germans Stock Up on Weapons for Self-Defence The scramble to acquire weapons comes amid an indisputable nationwide spike in migrant-driven crime, including rapes of German women and girls on a shocking scale, as well as physical assaults, stabbings, home invasions, robberies and burglaries — in cities and towns throughout the country. German authorities, however, are going to great lengths to argue that the German citizenry's sudden interest in self-defence has nothing whatsoever to do with mass migration into the country, despite ample evidence to the contrary. ( More appeasing media bullcrap ) The spike in violent crimes committed by migrants has been corroborated by a leaked confidential police report, which reveals that a record-breaking 38,000 asylum seekers were accused of committing crimes in the country in 2014. Analysts believe this figure — which works out to more than 100 crimes a day — is only a fragment: many crimes are not reported. willedoo
I don't think Angela Merkin really knew what she was getting into when she invited everyone to come and live in Germany. Interesting reading in the article that Germany has some of the tightest weapons laws in Europe. Not as tight as ours by the look of it, as they say that non-lethal self defence weapons are legal there. Not so here.

"Most of the crimes reported to police were robberies." A British woman visiting Cologne said fireworks had been thrown at her group by men who spoke neither German nor English. "They were trying to hug us, kiss us!" she told the BBC. Is it any wonder? Given he anti Muslim sentiment being widely expressed I am not surprised by the report. Even funnier...every report gives differing numbers... hmmm. It seems people are just making anything up and reporting higher and higher numbers... I wonder why??? I've been in Berlin at New Year's Eve, 2006. It was like a war zone with fireworks - idiots were even setting rockets off inside a train station. I'd be surprised if the number of serious injuries from fireworks didn't far exceed the serious sexual assaults in ANY given year. I'm not downplaying the seriousness of sexual assaults, but to automatically make assumptions about the background of the perpetrators ("from appearance were largely from the north African or Arab world") THEN link that to the large influx of refugees in order to push some anti-immigration barrow, is a stretch too far. Every so often news pops up of Australian men going to countries like Thailand or the Philippines to sexually prey on children. If it was reported like this, it'd be like saying "All Australian tourists are paedophiles, we shouldn't let them into our country".

Marty_d
Hey Phil, Calamari with cumin and onion rings sounds great. Book me in next time I'm over your way! Berlin may have changed in the last 9 years. My point is, it was bloody scary back then on NYE. I did mention to my wife (quietly, so our German friend couldn't hear) that I thought we'd skipped back in time to 1945... I think the point I'm trying to stumble to is that this sh*t is complicated. Firstly there's the concentration effect of media reporting. We see 60 reported sexual assaults, the perpetrators appear to be north African or Arabic (how many of them? All? Some?) and coupled with the high influx of Syrian refugees we are led, un-subtly, to the conclusion that the muzzies are invading to rape our womenfolk. I would start by asking if the reporter did any proper statistical analysis of the assaults. Is the number of sexual assaults significantly higher than other years? Was the severity of the assaults worse than other years? Why was the appearance of the perpetrators important? (A sexual assault is a sexual assault, whether committed by a first-, second-, third- or 500th-generation German.) If the reporter is indeed trying to link the influx of refugees to the assaults, have they determined how many (if any) of the perpetrators were refugees? Then we have the big-picture stuff. Let's say for argument's sake that the isolationists have a valid point, and after all the facts and stats have been checked, it's proven that there's a higher rate of criminal activity by immigrants from specific regions. What do you do with the 99.9% of law-abiding people from that region? Refuse them entry? Start discriminating by race or religion? Say to someone fleeing torture or death in their home country "Sorry - we don't want you, because we're scared of you - go home and die, or spend the next 10 years living in a camp where your children will have minimal education and live in fear and squalor."? There are no easy answers to this. You can't just "fix" their home country by forcible regime change, that's been tried multiple times by the US and has usually resulted in a worse situation than before. You can't expect the countries around them to bear the burden alone. I would argue that you can't even shut your borders and lock up asylum seekers (like we do) as the humanitarian consequences have been proved to be terrible for those people. So - sorry for the ramble - in summary my point is that the situation is far more complicated than the picture you get from media reporting.
