red750 Posted August 19 Posted August 19 Aussie claims they were turned away from driving test over little-known road rule. The Sydney driver says they weren't allowed to do the driving test – and forfeited the fee – thanks to their car's rear indicator. Read story here. 1

onetrack Posted August 19 Posted August 19 All vehicle lighting is highly regulated and you can be defected for any faded or discoloured lenses, regardless of whether they're indicators, park lights, stop lights, or even headlights. However, I cannot understand how some manufacturers got away with covering amber indicator lenses with opaque plastic lenses, which reduce the effectiveness of the indicator lens.
old man emu Posted August 19 Posted August 19 It's a worry for me a my headlight lenses are very degraded. I have an uncommon car and it's a2005 model.
spacesailor Posted August 19 Posted August 19 The Hight of the ' tail-light ' is also regulated. But those car-makers get away with having lights in different positions. spacesailor 1
facthunter Posted August 19 Posted August 19 They can usually be repolished and recoated. . Ask a panelbeater. They do it all the time. Nev 1
red750 Posted August 19 Author Posted August 19 Supposedly toothpaste is good for cleaning up a cloudy headlight lens. A cloth to apply it, a sponge and bucket of water to rinse it off. 1
old man emu Posted August 19 Posted August 19 Unfortunately, the muck on my headlights is inside. I have seen a way to gently heat the assembly to soften the adhesive so the clear part can be removed from the assembly. If I could do that cleaning the inside would be quite simple using commercially available lens cleaning kits. 1
onetrack Posted August 19 Posted August 19 OME, the Taiwanese companies Depo and TYC manufacture a huge aftermarket range of headlights and taillights, and they're often available on eBay. In fact, a lot OEM headlights and taillights are made in Taiwan. I just picked up a complete set of Taiwanese headlights for a mates 3 tonne, 2003 Hino Dutro 300 truck, off eBay - $340 for the pair, the truck dealers wanted over $500 each for them! The genuine Hino headlight is $1500!! https://www.ebay.com/b/Taiwan-Car-Truck-Tail-Light-Assemblies/33716/bn_116909045 2

facthunter Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Make sure your replacement is for RHD. Don't leave finger marls on a halogen globe. They overheat. Nev

nomadpete Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Couldn't find Cheap replacement headlights for our Mitzi. Cheap replacement Chinese clear plastic lenses are $100 ea.but I'm not sure they would last as well as the originals 1
onetrack Posted August 20 Posted August 20 What model and year Mitzi do you own, Pete? Anything over 20 years old becomes a bit of a challenge to source parts for.
nomadpete Posted August 20 Posted August 20 07 outlander. She has cateracts. I have polished her eyes a couple of times. New headlights have always been around $700 ea. But in US they are half that, then add $200 'freight'. 1

Yes, been caught with that before. Bought a pair of 7" headlights from supercheap and didn't figure out why I couldn't get them aimed properly. There was tiny lettering embossed on the glass - LHD. 1
nomadpete Posted August 21 Posted August 21 I didn't expect Supercheap to be selling headlights that were only suitable (& legal) in LHD countries such as USA and Europe. It pays to double check everyting! 1
spacesailor Posted August 21 Posted August 21 Just like bunnings selling mm tap-washers, & not telling you they also have the ' older ' 1/2 '' for the taps installed prefrench. spacesailor 1
