old man emu Posted September 2 Posted September 2 From mid-September to mid-October 2024 we might be entertained by the passage of a comet across our skies. 1
onetrack Posted September 2 Posted September 2 I can't even pronounce its name, and it will probably appear at a time when I'm in my deepest sleep mode, as so many seem to do.
willedoo Posted September 2 Posted September 2 I got a good view of Halley's Comet in 1986. Myself and a couple of mates did a short job on Nappamerri Station in SW Queensland and we had a rough maggot camp for a few days on the station's higher country while the comet was passing. Outback night skies and no generator made for good viewing. Those on the coast didn't get a very good view of it but where we were it really stood out. 2
old man emu Posted September 2 Author Posted September 2 I want to see the annual meteor shower a couple of weeks later. Last year the sky above me was 10/10 cloud. I get a really good look at the stars now since I'm well away from any townships. I was thinking just last night that I should get a start chart and see if I can name what I see. 2
willedoo Posted September 2 Posted September 2 When I used to do the remote work I also got to see that big meteor shower that went for a few days. I don't remember what year it was. There were thousands of them like little glowing specks darting across the sky. 1
onetrack Posted September 2 Posted September 2 I can recall Halleys Comet as a complete and utter disappointment, it was nothing like it was promised to be. A case of the goods not meeting expectations. We only saw a moderately dull glow in the sky.
spacesailor Posted September 3 Posted September 3 I bought a 'telescope ' for Halley's but it only came out as cotton wool. spacesailor 1
pmccarthy Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Did you send the cotton wool back and ask for the telescope? 1
