Statesmen would be very lonely figures in the extreme political divides currently present in the world. Statesmen can't work within a paradigm of volatile political enemies, what would a statesman say? "Ladies and gentlemen, let's act normal and live in peace." ... then have rotten tomatoes thrown at him.

 

Political divides are now wider than the solar system, they need to be narrowed quite substantially before statesmen can rise to the top. A leader of honour can only rise up within a society of honour. Not until we find common ground will societies be honorable and honest.

And where have the "divides" originated from? From people such as Donald Trump, who is the most divisive U.S. President ever seen. He specialises in sowing hatred, division, inequality - and surrounding himself with people chosen only for their loyalty to him, nothing else. Scheming Roman Emperors have nothing on Donald Trump.

 

Statesmen and Stateswomen unite people of different beliefs and outlooks and work towards improving the life quality of the everyday person in their nation. Trump only believes in enriching himself and his super-rich mates. He doesn't give a rats rectum about the ordinary Joe, he considers him a "loser". 

 

Trump claimed he would bring down the cost of living when he became President, then says he will introduce punishing tariffs on thousands of items everyday Americans buy. The end result will be Americans will pay more for everything they want to buy. Trump doesn't even grasp basic import/export economics.

Yeah, and we've all seen the level of mutual respect promoted by Donald Trump! It is ZERO! This is the bloke who refers to political opponents or members of Govt Depts as "scum", "worthless", "enemy of the people". MAGA supporters are the ones producing T-shirts reading "Rope. Tree. Manipulation of the media is the first major aim of any dictator who wants to suspend and eliminate any opposition to his rule. Trump specialises in favouring his selected extreme right wing media, and operating his own social media network so he can manipulate and twist facts, into distorted versions of his own reality.

 

Every single decision that Donald Trump makes, is specifically designed to make Donald Trump richer, nothing else matters.

The Trump rain of verbal diarrhoea and pure unadulterated BS continues at his desk interviews. He claims "Iran was broke" when he left office last time. Yeah, so that means that they were unable to keep producing vast numbers of military drones, nuclear weapons and support Hamas and Hezbollah wholesale since he left office. What a load of complete drivel.

 

He claims "he wouldn't let anyone do business with them (Iran)" while he was in power. The reality is that Iran still has vast amounts of oil, and China was quite prepared to buy lots of it, despite Trump saying he could stop China buying Iranian oil.

 

Then he goes on to claim that Americans have done everything and led the world in everything that was world class. He even claimed "America split the atom". The howls of laughter are still ringing around the world and shows how utterly bereft of even basic knowledge this orange clown is. The atom was split in 1917 by New Zealander Ernest Rutherford at Manchester University in the U.K.

 

He seems to ignore the fact that Chinese labour built nearly all the major railroads in America in the 1800's. The Chinese would work anywhere, in any conditions, and for very little money - so it wasn't Americans that built their biggest national infrastructure asset.

Trump is a consequence of prolonged social and political mega division. So too was Joe Biden. Each was/is tearing down the work of the other. Trump is now resurrecting what he started in his first term, and never finished. Their egos couldn't agree on anything.

 

If Biden had finished the southern wall for example, then that would have indicated agreement on at least one essential major Trump policy and would have put him in favor with the majority of Americans. The chaos resulting from not completing the wall's construction, did enormous damage to Biden and the Democrats. Being spiteful to Trump on that policy was idiocy beyond belief and made the political divide even wider, with the words "civil war" bandied around. When things get that bad, we should perceive that something is terribly wrong ... and it is the mile long gap in the social/political divide. Each party is formulating their respective policies on different planets, for the same nation

The opinions here are bouncing around in an echo chamber. With the benefit of hindsight, I consider Biden's term to be far, far worse than Trump's first term. Based on actions and outcomes, not on what they said or claimed. I am hopeful (though not confident) that Trump will fix a lot of problems in the USA and in global relations. 

 

Most Trump critics focus on what he says, not what actually happens. He is full of BS and bluff, but it is an effective strategy for change. I think he is far more cunning than given credit for.

 

By contrast Biden and his people are hypocritical dishonest low-life oligarchs and have now shown their true colours.

GON, show me the cost/social effectiveness of any border wall that was ever built? The Berlin Wall? The Great Wall of China? The Border Wall in the U.S. was meant to be nothing more than a boost to Trumps ego.

 

Every country in the world has some form of immigration control, it's necessary to keep out undesirable people. But a Wall to stop undesirables is laughable in the extreme, and the U.S. Border Wall will only end up as a long-term monument to Trumps folly and lack of Statesman-like thought processes.

And @pmccarthy - compare the economic performance of the Trump administration to that of Biden, who was handed by Trump comparatively worse performing economy resulting from Covid..

 

I am not sure where you get sure info from. But this time, like last time, Trump has been handed a better economy than last time. Let's see where it is in 4 years.

The caravans of thousands have stopped already, so the completion of the wall can be done at a leisurely pace going forward. Just having Trump and Homan in the administration is enough to make any illegal think twice about trying to cross the southern border.

A bit of adherence to FACTS would go a long way with this debate.  It's NOT easy to  find  FACTS. That's the way the system works Trump NEVER has it right. His followers believe every word he says. Inflation and National debt are facts America must face. Trump himself has said HE doesn't read books. and I don't doubt he's correct BUT .. How's THAT a Good thing? Making a Virtue out of deliberate ignorance and are the C in C of the US Armed Forces. Break deals and that's OK? Not where I come from. Any Country needs the Best that Country can get.. The Berlin Wall was a very cost-effective measure that did exactly what it was designed to do. I wasn't around for the Great Wall of China, Hadrian's Wall, or the Walls of Babylon, but I suspect that each made a political statement and kept out the barbarians as designed for quite a while.

The question is, which side are the barbarians on.

Look, you guys can hope for the best, and hey, there's nothing wrong with that.

 

But look at the man himself, his character, his ignorance, his lies, his vindictiveness, his avarice, his criminality, his attitude to women... the list goes on and on.

Then look at who he aligns himself with and chooses to support.  Other criminals (Giuliani, Roger Stone, Jeffrey Epstein etc), white supremacists, fundamentalist christians, absolute nutcases (Marjorie Taylor Greene is one prime example), dictators, tech billionaires, fossil fuel companies.

 

KNOWING ALL THAT, if you think his term in office can result in anything positive for the US or the rest of the world, then I suggest your optimism is outweighing your realism.

Note his reason for the pardon: Trump said he had called Ulbricht’s mother to tell her he would pardon her son “in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly”.  As long as you vote for him, you're in the clear no matter what kind of a scumbag you may be.

 

He's also let all the J6 criminals convicted of serious crimes out, no doubt because they supported him and he wants to re-write the history of what happened.
