AAP and Reuters used to be the Ones. Monopolies are there fora reason. Power and Control. Views and LIES. Certainly NOT NEWS. Under the Cloak of FREE speech, they drown out TRUTH. Nev

Modern news :- too much of info,, comment,, comment,, outrage,, blah, blah.....

Then you find that all the above was told by some individual (of nil credibility) that the reporter met down the road....

And this is masquerading as investigative reporting.

Bring back the old dull factual reporting with reference to origins of facts.

If ABC is dull but factual compared to Commercial news, it has more credibility.

I like examples....  but I don't know of an example where news was twisted by the abc, so in the meantime I reckon its factual.

It's Government funded, and as such, it will always follow the government line, which is why I read news from many other sources, attempting to filter out political biases to arrive at bare facts.

The ABC is factual, but only with the stories it reports on. It's the stories that it refuses to report that worries me greatly about the ABC. Obviously because the our ideological governments don't want them talked about in public.

Funny you say that. GON. The ABC pursues the gov't and can't even be fair with this one perhaps because it's full of Ex Murdoch people. and are too lazy to do their homework.  Most of the rest is Murdoch, especially in QLD.. .  Nev

The ABC is funded with public money but in no way is a mouthpiece for the government, no matter who is in.

In fact you generally find that both the Government and the opposition are usually annoyed at the ABC, which must mean it's doing something right.

Not necessarily.  But. It in NO WAY resembles PRAVDA as Hopeless ELON says. Plenty of LNP entities would never appear on it on principle. It's their policy to sell it off which is what Murdoch wants (surprise surprise).. The COMMERCIAL Media spend a lot of effort Bagging the ABC no matter how well it performs.  IF you spend a lot of money on adverts you get a lot of say in what the view of the station is.  That's the argument for funding the ABC  from people's taxes. If you want good government, ban lobbyists and political donations.  If he who pays the piper calls the tune, then the only people paying the political parties should be the Australian people.

Potentially controversial statement, but needs elaborating. The major parties already get $20,000,000 each in public funding per election. Are you saying they should get more?

What about their attack on Heston Russell and their admission that video of civillians being shot in Afghanistan was doctored.

I think that is a little out of context. Like all organisations, you will get the occasional rogue for genuine mistake for whatever reason. Ignroing the sensationalism of Sky and the Daily Wail, the ABC are announcing an independent inquiry into what went wrong: https://www.theguardian.com/media/2024/sep/17/abc-australion-troops-afghanistan-helicopter-footage-editing-ntwnfb

I have not found anything subsequent.

How often is the ABC embroiled in this sort of shennanigans compared to, I dunno, a record payout for continually and knowingly pedalling untruths about certain votyin machines in the 2020 US elections, and the other voting machine company are just getting started, too? And how much does that and other private press organisations get themselves into hot water, or are clearly manipulating stories? And how many even abisde by the guidance issued by the Aussie Press Council, as they have no teeth, let alone appoint an independent inquiry.

You can think the ABC arre tainted, and they may be.. but if they are, they are miles behind the others..

This discussion seems to be focussing on the news/current affairs area of the ABC, but that is not its only area of operation. Don't forget that the ABC is the Nation's emergency information broadcaster. Which cricket commentary do you prefer? What about the ABC's support of the very many formats of music? The ABC provides the voice for the expression of Australian culture in its many forms. Tell me which commercial media organisation does nearly as much.

So it would appear that there is only one department of the ABC that could have its standards examined.

Also ban politicians and their staffers from taking jobs with companies that they had contact with during their political careers. Conflict of interests don't seem to matter. Couple in recent times have gone into the gas industry

Seems hard to argue with this, and you are correct. But a new "form" in the ABC's "Australian culture" appears to be Minority inclusivity, and occasionally an ABC journalist will express subtle jibes directed at any public figure with differing views to the major parties' bipartisan policies. Not to mention the uncomplimentary snipes and images of Donald Trump. The ABC should keep their nose out of the political arena, and just report facts.

And the ABC should say to the commercial media, "Et tu, Brute".
