I forgot to vote in 2 council elections in a row. On both occasions I received a penalty notice. The notice said I could a avoid the fine if I had a reasonable excuse.  On the back of the form was a long list of reasonable excuses for me to choose from. I avoided a fine on both occasions.

The opportunities to vote have never been greater.  I don't think I have voted on the actual election day in years. I either go to an early voting centre or vote by mail.

GON I don't know how remote your residents is but you must be able you to buy food. I would have thought that these shopping trips would afford an opportunity to vote postal or early

When I lived in a rural area neighbours would ring and say they were going into town and did we need anything.

Where I lived the posty was happy to pick up mail.  Your user name on this forum includes the word "Grumpy" maybe it is just more difficult for grumpy people to get favours.

You are becoming progressively more IRRATIONAL. GON   There's a historical reason to compulsory voting . It is to PREVENT Bosses & stand over people etc stopping you. . FFS IF it's SO bad here Piss off, and join the Trump ratbags and be HAPPY. Nothing anyone here says will make one Iota of difference to your ravings. Nev

Australia is in a minority of compulsory voting nations. It's quite strange how we believe so fervently in majority rule, then shun that principle on an international basis. Why are we in the UN?

You sure don't get MAJORITY rule in countries that don't count the votes of all the available voters.

That path leads to MINORITY rule outcomes.

What we will have to watch is the demographic of the voters. Millennials (1981 - 1996) and a proportion of Gen Z (1997 - 2012) will definitely outnumber those born before 1964 and may be close in numbers to Gen X (1965 - 1980). How will those younger people vote. Who has listened to their hopes and fears? These are the people whose lives and those of any youngsters they have are just beginning. We old farts are looking towards life eternal.

I don't think old farts can claim to set a course for the country into the future based on our experiences. I feel that the only thing that experience has taught me is that society is in a state of constant change.

Old Farts is Derogatory and putting people in Boxes has serious limitations and is unhelpful, in understanding things. Too much of a generalisation. I'd like to think we could rise above that.  Nev

The "old farts" was meant to be humorous. Of course there would be a great diversity of opinion amongst the electorate regardless of their ages, however I was trying to imply that each of those groups grew up under different conditions from the other groups. That has got to have affected their outlook towards many subjects. Whichever Party can dial into those different outlooks would gain the most electoral support.

The hardest thing is to care and HOW to be well informed.  WE all need the best government possible. The WHOLE WORLD. How many have anything even remotely like it, They turn into rotten dictators if you allow it. or the SHOW that works for the Richest NOT the Country, because of the  "Spoils of Office". WHO wants GINA  or Big Clive having a large say in the outcome?  Nev
