I tend to avoid FB Sir,. . . apart from auto-feeding blog threads via sharing, but my eldest Daughter says amongst her friends they are all brexiteers apparently. . . when she can't convince undecided friends, she resorts to humour ( dunno where she got that from. . . )

Like this. . . .

DON'T LEAVE THE EU ! . . . . . .or the cat gets it.

Younger Daughter is recieving veiled threats that a Leave vote would cause her employer to close down, as most of their output consists of rubber & plastic products for the European motor industry. I've mentioned that it is BUSINESSES which create trade, and not Governments. Since we are one of the largest export markets for BMW, Audi, Citroen, Renault, Seat, Skoda, . . . can anyone imagine that they would refuse to sell us their stuff ?. . . . it doesn't stack up nor make any sense at all.

We ( the UK ) buy far more from EU countries than they buy from us, so any prohibitive trade tarrifs would only work against them. . . .

Have you seen that video from Norway I posted earlier ?. . . we are getting the same threats and arguments. Norway is far better off outside the EU, has full control of all of it's Oil and fishing waters and does not have to bow to EU regulations and laws, nor quotas on what type / quantity of fish it is allowed to catch.

The decision is a no brainer to those of us who have not swallowed the constant mainstream media programmed propaganda.

Er... Phil old buddy,

While you guys are doing such a sterling job of taking unwanted Australians (eg Rolf Harris, Shane Warne)... just wondering if you'd be kind enough to take Tony Abbott too? There's sure to be a room for him at the Palace and he'd get on extremely well with the UKIP leadership (just watch him or he'll take over).

Just leave him here until after 2nd July, as he's doing his best to get Labor elected.

Thanks!

Good idea, Marty. You'd need a wide body to fly him over there though (to accomodate the ears and reduce drag).

He might find it a bit cool for the budgie smugglers in the Thames, so there'd be adjustments.

I'm watching a documentary about agriculture in post-war Britain. When it dealt with the 60's decade it mentioned the effects of EU tariffs causing a change in the type of wheat being grown in Britain because bread wheat could no longer be imported from Australia and Canada. It also mentioned the massive food stockpiles caused by overproduction, and the government subsidies required to stop farmers producing crops. Another point it made was the amalgamation of farming land by the removal of hedgerows, which adversely affected the micro environments which had developed in them over thousands of years of human activity. It also pointed out the destruction of boggy environmental niches due to their being drained for grain production.

It seems that if Britain leaves the EU, the agricultural industries will be able to operate in the global free market, and become profitable.

I think this is the problem with most people today. They're afraid to see the truth that's all around them. . . . .

Interesting propaganda vid,. . .believe it or not. . .as the case may be,. .BUT, It is a fact that there have been absolutely NO MAINSTREAM MEDIA REPORTS re: the migrant problem in Calais on UK TV or Mainstream newspapers for over three months. . . . they used to be shown every day on all the news channels. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but this does seem to smell a little bad. . .

Thank the Lord for Vladimir Putin and his RT ( Russia Today) news service. They just report what's happening, without much in the way of comment.

Total media blackout of invasion of Europe. No Calais or Greek-Macedonian border, no boats crossing. No immigrants arriving at Lesbos and other Greek Islands, No reports of boatloads of migrants crossing from Libyan coast. . . Nothing. . . .Zilch. . . . . . Crisis hidden.

Sick.

Phil, I'd agree that RT is a good news service for reporting world news events, as is Sputnik (formerly Ria Novosti).

Being partially Government funded, there is some self promotional bias there at times, but they're not alone in the world there.

Where they get the edge is their independance (in their foreign offices) from foreign governments and mainstream Western press. In Australia, it's quite common to read breaking news stories about Australian domestic issues on RT several hours before we can see them on our own press. The Australian RT office gets the news, then reports it. No spin doctors or editors fretting over how to fit the story into a convenient box.

It's very rare that RT or Sputnik are critical of their own President or the Government, which reflects their funding source. Having said that, the Western urban myth is that all Russian media is tightly controlled by the Government. Quite the opposite, many other Russian news services apart from RT and Sputnik, regularly run articles very critical of the Government and of the President personally. I've followed their news on a daily basis for many years and overall, I'd rate theirs as being fairer and more balanced than most Western press.

With most Western press, the artform has evolved into avoiding printing all the truth, rather than trying to influence by printing untruths. The deceit is by selective omission, thus changing the context. In other words, they tell us what we want to hear and what they want us to hear (often the same thing). Welcome to the Matrix.

It's the Suppression of news which gets my goat Willie. The MSM were all over the migrant influx, with AljaBeeba sending dozens of reporters and camera crews to all the flashpoints. This was on every news report, all day every day, including the BBC spin by using mainly pictures of poor women holding terrified kids, and ignoring all the fighting age males, . . . then, all of a sudden,. . . it's gone deathly quiet. Only RT is reporting ANYTHING about migrants.

This will be maintained until after June 24th, as will the publication of the long awaited Chilcott report into the Government lies and obfuscation which led the UK into the Gulf war. ( Take a bow Tony "Weapons of mass destruction in 45 minutes" Blair.

It's the sick cynicism of the whole thing which annoys those who can think and are prepared to look around for other sources of information.

I'd say you're right there, Phil. News agencies have realized that it's very, very, naughty to tell fibs.

The same result can be achieved by suppression of the truth, as you say. It's not all that legal for the press to lie, but no law against not reporting.

Brilliant Pic that Phil, perhaps, since you are obviously a historian par excellence; you could write a little piece about the 'Agincourt / Waterloo Salute' pictured, and enlighten the uninformed as to why it came about ?

Cheers.

OME

Most people I know are voting for Brexit. I generally try to avoid politics but people are quite open on their desire to leave the EU. A few friends are trying to persuade others to vote Remain, but they're generally the 'moral high-ground making up for my joke degree' types trying to make out they're intelligent. Have seen the usual accusations of racism towards those voting leave, you know the typical smear tactics.

I'm personally a bit torn on the issue. On the one hand is leaving the EU a step back from what is essentially the future ie a world government? On the other is it acceptable to have a corrupt government like the EU that is screwing certain members such as the UK which has seen its manufacturing and fishing industries decimated. Is that really the future we want?

Personally I'd prefer a huge reform of the EU rather than exit. However when has a government ever wanted to reduce their control? I also hope that leaving the EU would encourage trade amongst the Commonwealth again rather than having the EU dictate who we trade with (looks positive with Canadian government looking forward to trade deals). I personally favour forming a UK-OZ-NZ group that allows free movement, trade and work spacer.png Probably the only way we can get out to Oz seeing as my wife is not 'qualified enough' to do her job despite 18 years in the role spacer.png

Sorry, FT, but you can't pin the blame for the failure of the Dardanelles campaign on Churchill. Strategically, it was a sound plan to force passage through from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, thereby giving access to the Russians; opening a third Front against the Austro-Hungarians, and weakening the Ottoman Empire's grip on that part of Asia.

The criminals responsible for their deaths were the British High Command who failed to adequately resource the campaign - insufficient artillery of the correct type, and insufficient ammunition for those guns that were sent. Then there was the gross incompetence of the British Generals in the field who failed to follow up the early gains made on the 25th April, and who thereafter ordered attacks with more chance of daring-do than success. We all know of the slaughter of the Light Horse, but what about the slaughter of Australian and New Zealand troops at the 2nd Battle of Krithia, also in the Dardanelles. Given half an hour to assemble before moving off, these troops were ordered to move across open fields in broad daylight. They were as wheat before the scythe.
