Mark11 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 As I was walking home, this fly flew laps around my head despite the wind blowing hard! Couldn't get rid of it! Even though the fly is small, the wind seemed no problem to it! It's way to strong for Microlight flying. I have been told that small insects and flies actually swim through the air, because to them, the air is very thick If that's true, they are very good at it because they can fly in strong wind and change direction instantly.... I guess very little inertia to deal with and plenty of air friction!
facthunter Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 The application of scale effect ( reynolds number). Build a boeing sized fly and it just wouldn't work aerodynamically. Be a bit of a buzz at the aerodrome though. Nev
deltacharlie Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I had a similar thing happen last week while driving. Stopped at the lights and a fly landed on the windscreen and wandered about. I expected him to be blown off when I moved but NO-- the little bugger just turned to face the wind and stuck there while I did 85kmh! Happened every time I stopped.

Maybe you need to clean the windscreen? rgmwa
spacesailor Posted August 9, 2018 Posted August 9, 2018 Get rid of the dead insects. your fly is feeding on. LoL spacesailor (Pet Fly)
facthunter Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Something fishy about that fly hanging on. Perhaps it's the chips in your windscreen.? Nev
Soleair Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 More likely the static boundary layer, & slower airstream adjacent to it. Bruce
pmccarthy Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 I have seen flies sit on the top of a Cherokee wing for an hour and then when you land and shut down they fly away.
facthunter Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Just getting in practice to be a vortex generator. How far back do they prefer? Nev
facthunter Posted August 11, 2018 Posted August 11, 2018 They are clever. That's where separation begins. (on average) Nev.
