old man emu Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 I'm sorry, but I'm fed up with reasonable discussions being hijacked by the arguments carried on by Theists and Athiests. In an endeavour to keep those other discussions 'on topic,' I would ask those of you who wish to argue your Theist or Atheist case to do so here and not muddy the waters of other topics. Is that fair enough? OME
SDQDI Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 I like the idea OME but realistically I think it is optimistic. It would be nice to have a thread for politics and one for beliefs but the trouble is those things influence lots of other topics hence they always get brought up. I don't think it is unreasonable when already in an off topic thread to discuss them but I do think we should try and keep them out of the threads in the rest of the site.
old man emu Posted November 19, 2016 Author Posted November 19, 2016 SDQDI, You are one of the ones who has hijacked another off topic thread : Republican win and other threads. I don't want to have plough through your, and your debating opposition's verbiage to follow the original topic. That's why I created this thread. The only other option was to report all posts from both sides to the Moderators, which could result in removal of access. Hardly a path towards free speech. Besides, I have some thoughts on the topic that I'd like to add to the discussion, but I don't want to annoy anyone following the original thread by going off topic. Old Man Emu
SDQDI Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 Now now OME I certainly didn't mean to hijack the republican win thread, actually I only placed my comment there after many off topic posts had already been posted. Now not meaning to be nit picky but wasn't this the first post to bring theology into that thread? But Israel is based on preserving the governance of a sector of the human population by a non-tangible entity whose existence cannot be proved by any currently observable means. OME[/
old man emu Posted November 19, 2016 Author Posted November 19, 2016 Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I should have added a 'tongue in cheek' emoticon to that post, but I was alluding to the T/A posts in other threads. As you say - "after many off topic posts had already been posted." I'm just saying that enough is enough in those other threads. Let's keep the T/A discussion in one place. OME
SDQDI Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 I do like the idea OME. I do enjoy stirring a bit though so had to point that one out:wink:
nomadpete Posted November 19, 2016 Posted November 19, 2016 Well, SDQDI, After all, This IS an off topic thread in an off topic forum so shouldn't all posts here be allowed (actually encouraged) to drift OFF topic? Otherwise what is the point in posting?
old man emu Posted November 20, 2016 Author Posted November 20, 2016 A pointed post. Isn't that another name for a star picket?
old man emu Posted November 20, 2016 Author Posted November 20, 2016 I have given in to temptation!
nomadpete Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 OME, please! Thread drift! How can you expect us to understand what constitutes drifting off topic in an off topic thread when you keep bringing religeon into it? And that's NOT a pointed post!
old man emu Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 The original Drifters
nomadpete Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 OME, you started out so well. Thanks for rightly pointing out that the irrelevant T/A theme had been creeping into too many other threads. However so far nobody has come here to argue theology in this thread! You have succeeded in starting a theology free thread!
SDQDI Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Not aimed at anyone in particular!! Just a funny off topic video.
nomadpete Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 It still didn't start a A/T argument. Maybe I should seed the thread with a couple of outrageous turbo remarks
Bikky Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 A very interesting link Current & Former Religious Professionals Not Believing In The Supernatural Some interesting stories from people who have lost their faith (or come to their senses!).
old man emu Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 Bikky, . What right have you got to post something 'on topic"? OME
Yenn Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Those original Drifters are like the bloke who posted the photo. They can't fly. At least not like a real Drifter
old man emu Posted November 24, 2016 Author Posted November 24, 2016 I like his idea that "God" is above and beyond any organised religion. That lets us focus the discussion on the existence or not of a "supreme being" without still carrying the millstone of all the theologies Humankind has created since first pondering what happens to the persona when death occurs. OME
Marty_d Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 There's already a theist/atheist thread with over 3,000 posts - started by the extremely theist Gnu.
Yenn Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Bishop John Spong seems to have the right idea.
nomadpete Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Mr Spon is therefore no longer a Christian, and therefore probably condemned to join the rest of us in the party corner downstairs, later on
nomadpete Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 OME With all due respect, "The information is unavailable to the mortal man", so it is difficult to make a cogent argument without somehow involving those human controlling mobs you refer to.
