I had one of those old sideboard sized wireless sets in my room as a teenager. A big coil to magnetise the speaker was also the ballast for the power supply, it hummed a lot. But I put up a long outside aerial and could get voice of America and a lot of Asian voices and dozens of Morse stations. The rectifier valve was a number like 30, I have forgotten, when other radios had modern valves in them.

When I was 'Hamming' about in Australia, I saw a Hallicrafters Receiver at a radio Junk fair, and found a transmitter to go with it some time later. . .

But as you mentioned, I had problems finding replacement valves for Both units, although while they worked, they were quite good for old stuff.

I really ought to add, that my neighbours were no rapt with the amount of TV interference this gear created while I was chatting to blokes in Japan, etc. . .. . . ..
