I'll know him, her. it when I see them. I have no preconceptions. Unlike all of the "theists". who think theirs is the only one and all the others are made up. Taking all of the beliefs into account the general consensus is the are all made up. It's the only reasoned conclusion possible based on the evidence..  Nev

In early Primary School, I did sums, which never used any other operands than "+" and "-", and the equality symbol, "=".

In late Primary School, I did arithmetic, which introduced the further basic operands, "x" and "÷".

In early Secondary School, I was introduced to the square of a number, square root, and the order of operations (BODMAS).

After getting a grasp on those basic operations, I entered the wider world of Mathematics, with all its subtopics.

From early Secondary School, my lesson timetable listed when I would attend Maths classes. The Greeks use mathimatiká, which means "all the mathematical things". That got translated to Mathematics, and eventually the three syllables forming "ematic" wer ditched, but the terminal "s" was retained.

Although mathematics and its derivative, maths, end in "s", which usually indicates the plural,  it is a "mass noun" like sugar or luggage, so it refers to "all the parts" and is singular.

What is the Order of Operations - BODMAS ?

B
Brackets first
O
Orders (i.e. Powers and Square Roots, etc.)
DM
Division and Multiplication (left-to-right)
AS
Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

At my age, BODMAS is usually used in reference to the need to eat less and exercise more...
